If it gets hot when sitting but cools down when moving then maybe the fans aren't coming on..
Or maybe your thermostat isnt opening..
I would Flush the cooling system and get a new thermostat to be safe..

Your in Australia??...Did you go to Jamboree.? I think they held it in Adelaide

The gauge measures water temp right? I think if the thermostat wasn't opening, then the water would stay cold. Does the water in the radiator actually get hot? If not, then it sounds like a faulty gauge to me. Perhaps it's some kind of electrical issue?

Mine was doing the same **** once, turned out to be just a cheap thermostat that wasnt working properly. Did the same thing though, would rise almost to the H and would drop a bit if i hit the gas hard.

could be low on coolant. bad thermostat or the fan is not coming on.

i would think its the coolant or the fan because it only happens when your sitting.

ok it used to be really bad, but i changed the thermo stat and it stays down for like a LOT longer now..

not the fan, because i always check the fan, it turns on at EXACTLY 90 degrees C

and not the coolant because i always check the coolant levels when cold and hot.

try this, when it goes to hot, put the heater on in the car full blast, does it help? if so your thermostat may be sticking, or stuck closed.

also when the car is full running and hot, pop the hood, is the lower radiator hose cold, if so, get a new thermostat in there...

if you replaced the thermo and your sure the system is fully bled properly then its time to start thinking about that water pump.

do you ever lose coolant when you drive?

before i had a water temperature (mechanical) guage in my car and from using that everything was fine according To it !.. But it Broke !!!

my mate said that his engine ground wire was LOOSE?
i saw mine its all brown, not loose but rusted a bit , could that be the problem ?
is it ok to take the bolt off where the engine ground wire is??

I'll say this again and someone correct me if my logic is faulty, but ...

If the water is not hot, but the gauge reads hot ... bad gauge or electrical connection right? Seems cut and dry to me. If your car is actually overheating, then you have some sort of cooling system issue, but if not, then your problem is electrical.

Good luck.
