Default How to tell if my clutch is going bad?

How can I tell if my clutch is going bad? It had 124K on it, never grinds, has no problem shifting, but when I am slowing down, and step on the clutch to downshift or put it in neutral, the clutch makes a strange sound sometimes. Not a grinding sound, but like a thudding sound. I know thats a bad description, but I would love some feedback. Thanks.

sounds like your clutch is going bad in a way other than normal wear and tear/slipping. might want to take the tranny off and check. if it makes noise when pushing the pedal in, could be a bad pilot bearing

Is this the only way to know, by removing the tranny?

its the only real way to know for sure...

you need to inspect everything, make sure nothing is messed up.
