Roof Skin questions for a DC2
hello all, my first time visiting this section of the boards and have a couple questions
i have a 97 ITR that I bought a couple years ago and the previous owner added a sunroof into the roof
anyways, i have some extra cash flow coming in, and was contemplating some options:
i want to take the sunroof out but not sure how to go about filling it. i want it stock as possible. i could:
1. remove the sunroof and have a shop weld in a panel?
2. does honda/acura sell a roof skin that can replace the whole roof? how much?
i have no experience in this and it isnt going to be done by me obviously. what is the best alternative and the cheapest? i have a connection for paint so thats no biggie.
i have searched and only a few posts are in the archives and its nothing that really helps me out.
thanks a lot guys
just for fun

Honda/Acura do sell the roof skins. Finding another non-sunroof DC roof skin in a salvage yard probably wouldn't be easy. You could weld in a plug and do some body work, but getting a huge/flat panel like that to look good wouldn't be easy either. Your best bet might be a new roof skin.
What ever you do DONT weld a patch. It would be nearly impossible to get it straight. Just get a new OEM roof panel. Roof panels are VERY easy to replace. Ecspecially in your case since it is so small.
I ran into the same problem with my EG and I hate sunroofs. Especially the uber gay pop up ones and thats exactly what I got.
I looked into it and a new roof skin is what I'm gonna end up doing. The only thing that sucks is having to get the window resealed but then again me and some friends were gonna do all the work ourselves. And welding a panel in will be nearly impossible to look good

To take the windshield and back glass out/in call a company that does it. Only reason if they break it they buy it. And they will do a much better job. Trust me

Only buy OEM. Just go down to your Acura dealer. It will cost around $350-400 probally

im in the same boat, but from what i heard the roof skins were a bit pricey, so my original plan was to just get the carbon kevlar cap along with the hood and trunk to keep it matching, .........none of which would need to be painted. But the whole time in the back of my head i would of just rather have a oem painted roof, trunk, and hood......and now that carbonall disappeared (roof cap maker), my only option is a new roof skin.
You would want to get a spot weld cutter which is a drill bit for spot welds http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...wItem You need to remove both front and rear glass plus the two roof trim panels to get to your spot welds.
On your car you would want to drill out each spot weld from the top down. This cuts only the top panel that is being replaced and not your shell which you will have to re-weld to. If you get one from a junk yard car you drill from the inside so you keep the panel in good shape. You will need to use a grinder to clean up the welds after you cut them so the panels can weld back together properly.
If you already planned on doing this sorry but I have seen this done the wrong way too many times and it is usually a mess.

What ever you do, don't reuse a roof from a salvage yard, trust me. Replacing a roof isn't as easy as you would think. On an integra roof, after you drill and chisel off, the main areas that need attention are the corner supports at all 4 corners of the roof, these need to welded properly(full penetration). These ares have the biggest chassis flex.
If you have never welded automotive sheetmetal do not try installing a roof!

Here is a link to how I removed the sunroof from my 89 hatchback.
