my friend was telling me if i ever get stopped and they check my vin # with the vin # on the engine and they dont match up that my car will be towed and impounded.

possibly. jdm motors are not legal for driving on u.s. roads as far as i know. plus you live in cali correct? they are very strict over there... im not sure if cali would allow it but most states allow you to swap in a similar or newer usdm engine though

i'm callin BS on that. I'm pretty sure there's a member on this board, if not more than one, who has gotten the cali certification on their JDM motors. Granted many things had to be changed over but i'm pretty sure its been done. Remember everything is different from state to state. Hell Florida still doesn't have inspections or emissions

No its not true...what you will get is a ticket saying you need to go to the state ref...as far as state ref goes...search california smog laws oh here or the net...also search getting an engine swap to pass state BAR. do some searching to much info to list that you need to know

yea it can be done. but jdm motors dont have vin numbers thats why people have a problem with them. but u can switch everything over so it'll pass smog and stuff. but idunno what to do about the whole vin number thing. i would just make sure u get a bill of sale with the motor.

ok i just got my jdm b16 ref. and passed what you have to do is you have to have a computer that matches that motor so for instance being in my eg i had to get a ecu from a del sol that had a b16a2 the motor and ecu had to be the same year or newer then my eg....then i had to go get a catalytic converter for a del sol and install it on my eg, i had to have my smog pump and o2 sensors all hooked up....i put a intake manifold from a del sols b16a2 on my motor,.......then i had to have my stock intake hooked up as well, with that i took my exhaust off and put stock back on and i chaged the spark plugs, cap and rotor and wires......i changed the oil in the car so at end all my sensors was hooked up i had all smog componets together and they ran car and passed with flying colors and its now bar stamped. it does take a bit i may have over did it a lil but i wanted to make one trip to the ref. and thats it and the way i did it, it passed 1st. out and es im in southern cali.....im getting ready to have my rhd ek hatch bar stamped with a type r motor in it cant wait i have already got right hand conversion looked at and approved now im going to do motor

Yea and then get a ticket and have a tow truck guy come over and open the hood for you. Not cool
As long as the motor is same year or newer of your car youll be fine. Worse case that happens is you get a Ref ticket and take the motor through BAR. Or another thing you could do is keep your D series and keep swapping it in everytime you get the ticket. Also JDM motors dont have a VIN number.
