Craftsman Valve Spring Compressor --- Can't get it to work. Any tips ?
Any techniques on how to use this tool? I want to upgrade my valves, went out to Sears to buy this tool, but it doesn't quite fit in properly. Any ideas on how to make this work? h22 cylinder head
Which valve spring compressor will you recommend ? I don't like the price of a Snap-On, so anything other than that ? Which did you use ?

I like the looks of this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...wItem
haven't tried it myself, so I don't know how well it actually works, but seems to be pretty straightforward.

get a nice wrap around style for installing springs...snap on makes a deadly one but at a cost and its fully adjustable for any head size or you can make your own all you need is the angle of the valves...
good luck
good luck
if all else fails here's what i do...
put the cylinder you're replacing the valves on the compression stroke.. inject air into that cylinder and take a 19mm deep socket (w/ a short extension on the socket).. place the socket on top of the valve.... and use a hammer to strike the extension to get the valve keepers out.. might have to give a few blows at it...
install the spring....
then when you're ready to install the valve kepers... you use a tool like this
for the keepers..

not necessarily if you're replacing valve springs... like i said earlier.. if you have an air compressor and the adapter from a compression tester that screws onto the spark plug hole... inject air into the cylinder you're replacing the valve springs (on the compression stroke).. and you can do it from there... but thats like a last resort thing.. lol.. i do recommend taking the head out..

An update ... My head is already removed from the block. I went ahead and order the tool that the guy was selling from eBay. By main concern now is ... On the title he says made for b16, b18, and h22 heads ... do these really have the same valve to head angles ?? He just mentions h22 in the title and nowhere else in the auction.
two types of valve compressors. Some are for with head out and some can be used with head still in though. The crapsman one you got looks like it can be used with head still on block!

I've got one, and it works quite nicely.
The type posted by PrecisionH23a works nicely as well, but you have to use one hand to keep pressure on the retainer.

Mgags7 has the one Precision posted and it works great, provided u have someone to hold the compressor and someone to pull the retainers. Trying to use that tool by urself and pull retainers would be an f'in task.

If you don't have a compressor, get a rope and put it down into the cylinder. Then rotate to TDC on that cylinder and the rope will hold the valves from dropping.
