1991 CRX DX I NEED SOME HELP, ANYONE?
Hey I got this 1991 crx dx and it is so slow man. I want to put a turbo on it, or do a moderate engine swap (thinking D15B) and turbocharge that. I don't want to get crazy and would ideally like to keep it at 1500cc. I drive the car 100 miles a day and want to keep good gas mileage and reliability, but it would also be nice to bone out if I feel like it.
Does adding a turbo mess with your gas mileage? How much do you think it would cost to get a turbo put on the stock block and what kind of gains could I expect?
If i swapped for a D15B how much do you think it would cost including turbo? What kind of gas mileage do you think I'd get?
I know I'm not an extreme racer or anything but I know some of you guys out there really know your crap and I would love some help.
Let me know
Thanks!

well for starters a d15b from hmotors is $499 and a turbo kit should run a couple thousand. You will need to convert to mpfi and run a jumper harness or something for obd 1 to run that motor.

there is a link for the d15b, and i will back up hmotors because i bought a motor there and they are awesome
as for the gas mileage, a turbo does take more gas to compensate for the extra air but in turn allows your motor to run much more efficiently so in turn, depending on how you have it tuned and how much boost you run, wont effect your gas mileage too much.
i am not sure, but with moderate boost and a good tune you could probably expect about 160-170 hp at the wheels.

awesome - thanks for taking the time. Do you (or anyone) know some guys that do good work without handing over my sack for payment? I don't have the time to do the stuff myself.
Any recommendations on a good moderate and reliable turbo brand for a D15B?

no problem
seriously consider buying from hmotors though because they will take care of you. I was in and out with my motor in my truck in 15 minutes. Plus you live in L.A. and they are in Burbank so it is a very short drive from you.

you can probably buy a pieced together homemade turbo kit for around 1000.00. you should check out d-series.org for more information and what to look for and how to build a proper turbo setup (so you dont blow your new motor). they have a forced induction forum with lots of great information for a person new to forced induction.
just to let you know, your crx already has a d15 in it. so even if you get a new one it will still be slow. you should just get a d16 vtec and work on that. or a b18b non-vtec and turbo it.

you must have a chipped ECU or something. 43MPG from an LS motor, I've never heard of something like that.

your adding the 7 to d15b. that makes it domestic. in japan it's only d15b. they don't use the numbers like we do. for as far as money goes a "JDM" d15b would be a good idea.

Vtec is over-rated.
