4.9 FD + transmission mod?
Ok, I have been keep on wondering about it for years. Would it be a good idea to install a 4.9 FD but to improve the highway speeds driving replace the ITR's 5th gear (0.848) to LS/RS 5th gear (0.714)? Do you guys think it is possible to do?
^ No problem. Chad's asking price for his ATS unit is VERY fair, I'd recommend getting up with him.
Or, I'd look into this deal too. I was considering going with this one, very good deal as well.

The 4.9 final drive is great. I have good experince with that mod.
Just so you can get an idea, in my Type-R at 80mph while in 5th gear my rpm was at about 5000 rpm. I would say do a little test with your car before deciding to change the 5th gear. Drive on the freeway and while in 5th gear take it to about 5000 rpm, maintain that range and see if you can handle that. If you think you can handle that rpm whenever you drive on the freeway then I would suggest to not switch your 5th gear. If I remember right, its only a difference of 500 rpm higher from stock after you switch to the 4.9 final drive.
I dont have experience with a 4.9 final drive and a taller 5th gear but I do remember reading some info about that in the past. I remember someone saying that with these 2 modifications your rpm will droop out of vtec if you redline 4th gear and then go to 5th. Maybe someone else that has first hand experience with this combo can give you more details about that.
Good luck
(one more thing- with the 4.9 final drive remember your top speed will drop. redline at 5th gear will be something around 130, I cant remember excactly the number but it wont reach the stock top speed. so just keep that in mind if it matters to you)

does anyone REALLY need to be in vtec while shifting into 5th gear??

On track, yes.
FWIW, I have an ATS 4.9 FD in my track car. Best mod I've ever done to it and I will be changing the FD in my DD soon as well, though given the HP I'm looking for, I'll probably only get a 4.7 FD
IIRC, Mfactory was making some direct bolt in FD's where you don't even have to change the 1st gear, and their parts are forged. Just food for thought.

Keep the ITR 5th gear. Contact KIWI for GEAR-X Final Drive components. They are of more quality as opposed to ATS. They are a direct bolt in, into USDM ITR transmissions w/o using JDM components.

Maybe that's who I was thinking of. They don't require the JDM 1st gear, and their parts are forged.

Correct me if Im wrong but I think theres a 5.1 final drive as well. Was Cusco?</TD></TR></TABLE>
It was a 5.08. If you have ever driven a 4.928, you will notice it is more than enough. It does quite well actually.
The Cusco 5.08 unit is discontinued.

Just remember that 4.9 is a 10% under drive. Just add that to whatever the RPM's are in every gear.
I thought about this mod years ago but got bit by boost.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out if you go through with it.
