Transmission case will not bolt back up to engine
A buddy and I spent all day Sunday just trying to put the transmission back on after changing the clutch. Engine is out of the car and we used a hoist to lift the transmission. Flywheel being used is an 8lbs. Findanza unit w/ an Exedy OEM clutch kit. Used alignment tool and everything bolted on fine, as there is only one correct way to bolt up the flywheel & clutch.
Now, as we're guiding the transmission in to bolt back up, it wont go in all the way. As easy as it was to slide the transmission out, it is being quite a bitch to put back on. Shaft is aligned correctly and the transmission case wont budge back on - it almost seems as though its hitting something inside; shaft is aligned correctly. You can stick your finger in between the gap we have left until the transmission mates perferctly all around. Any ideas?

as long as it is lined up correctly, and the input shaft is where it should be, put your tranny bolts in and in a kind of criss cross pattern, start tightening them, slowly. it should work its way back in, i did that twice to get it in there.
just make sure you're making progress as you tighten to be sure you're not hackin something up

ohh that far off huh? i know some of those bolts are pretty long, don't remember off the top of my head which though. none of them reach, even the longer ones?
when i had this problem, both times i had it apart, i pretty much had the tranny in my arms, my friend guided the input shaft and dowels, and i was just kind of shimmying (for lack of a better word) the tranny in to a point where the bolts would catch. kinda lifting/pushing/moving side to side/lifting the tranny until it was about 3/4" to 1" off, then bolts the rest of the way.

Normally, shouldn't the transmission case slide right back on, flush with the engine? I'm afraid I'd risk ruining the bolts trying to force it back on.
yea it should slide back on. i know what you mean with not wanting to ruin the bolts, but thats why i said go easy, do it criss cross, a little at a time on each bolt, and most important, make sure you are actually making progress. as in, make sure the tranny is slowly being pushed in, as opposed to you tightening, the tranny not moving, and you jacking up bolt threads.
i did it just like that twice, and it came out just fine.

Yeah, if you can get the tranny up to the point where the dowel pins hit the engine block, then the bolts should thread in OK. I'll be over there to help soon

Yup, you were right. Hawkze came over and we did the same thing, using the bolts to ease it back in.
