squeaking brakes
hey guys, i need some help with my brakes on the daily.
it's a 97 DX coupe with a completely stock brake system. my problem is that whenever i let off the brakes i get a squeaking sound? it only happens at or under 20mph. and only when i let off the brake pedal.
if i have the e-brake up it doesn't make any noise (when i press on and off the pedal) and if i just let the e-brake down with out pressing the brake pedal it makes the noise also.
can someone shed some light on this for me?

i have no idea but i took a look at them today and they've still got plenty left. and would the indicator tabs make noise when you release the pedal?
Could be what he said, could also be the side of the rear shoe rubbing against the drum groove, much like a caliper brake system does when the rotor rust on the far outside and inside of the contact area, which can cause that annoying squeak.

the sound is definately coming from the front of the car and there isn't any rust that would cause some noise like that from what i can see.
it's hard to diagnose anything over the internet.
thats why i tried being as informative as possible. i'll have to take it to a brake shop tomorrow and see what they say.
does anyone else have any other suggestions? like i said it's only when i release the pedel.

no the rotors are definately fine. they're still very smooth with no grooves visable to my eyes and touch. it's not when i'm coming to a stop it's making the noise...it's after i've already stopped and i release the pedal.

well by what you said when you pull up on the ebrake it makes noise, so i would assume that it would be coming from the rear of the car.
Another thing to take a look at is the splash shields for the front rotors if you believe it is coming from the front. Mine were bent up as hell and rubbed every once and a great while. When i changed my wheel bearings i pulled that crap off. Unlikely, but could be.
I would inspect your front brakes completely, and ensure that the caliper slides move freely. If the poles are bent they will bind and the pad will not release completely, currently happening to my rear caliper, but its well seized and doesnt move at all, yours might just be starting to.

How is the sound coming from the front if the parking brake changes it? It is NOT coming from the front if the parking brake alters the condition.
It is the rear shoes rubbing on the backing plate. If it was indicator tabs the parking brake would have no effect.
Pull off the rear drums and put some grease between the shoes and the backing plate where they rub. Should be 3 places on each shoe, 6 on each side.

no it's not when i pull the parking brake it's when i release it.
it makes the noise when pressure is getting released. not when i apply pressure.
for example...if i leave the parking brake up, then pump the brakes, there is no squeak. if i hold the button on the parking brake and just pull it up and down, everytime i release the parking brake it makes a sound.
same as for when i apply the brakes.
they are not making any noises when i'm slowing down and i'm still stopping fine. but when i pump the brakes at a dead stop, whenever I release the brake pedal it squeaks

Im supprised nobody mentioned that your brakes might be draging... same thing happened to me on my 97 DX coupe. strange squeeking noise when the brakes are released... i ended up rebuilding the whole calipers and flushing the fluid... and it didnt solve the problem. only after i replaced the rubber lines did the noise go away. it could have been that there was some kind of blockage in the lines.. however i split them open with a razor and didnt find any kind of obstruction but replacing them fixed the issue
