Rusting Rear Bumper, Anyone Else Have this?
I was poking around under the '97 ITR last night and noticed that under the rear bumper cover, there is metal in full rust mode.
(I actually discovered this when jumping up and down on the rear bumper - long story there - and heard a bad noise under my feet like the bumper was breaking).
For a couple of years I've been trying to diagnose a bad creaking type noise when I go over bumpy pavement, and now I think I have the answer (used to think it was from the suspension, which worried the hell out of me).
Part of me thinks that as long as the rust isn't attacking the body (which I don't know yet) it's not a big deal. In fact, the car should be somewhat lighter now...

Makes sense. It looks like a perfect environment for rust.
Having said that, this rust is MAJOR. I'm not sure sanding is going to get me anywhere. I'll post some pix soon.

hmmm.
I haven't really thought this through, but do I need a rear bumper? Other than for low MPH accident protection, is it providing anything structurally for the car?
