somebody give me at least some input on this. im going for very tight, accurate bass which i know the idmax is known for, not too much about the idq or the type x.

Get the Alpine, because it's the one I like the sound of.

I was being sarcastic, it would be hard for anybody here to decide which sub of the two you should get, both are pretty good, so it comes down to personal taste, which one do you like the sound of best?

If you were asking us to pick between one of them and a Sony xplod, it would be easy, most of us will tell you pick one of the ones you mention, along with a few derogatory remarks about Sony xplod, or Sony in general.

Sound is subjective, it is a personal thing, what you like a sub to sound like is not the way I want a sub to sound like.

All I can say is you can't go wrong with either one of them and don't forget, the kind, or quality, of sub bass will depend heavily on the quality of the sub box it is installed in, you say you want clean, tight accurate sub bass, then stick with a sealed box, and make sure the amp you use is a little overpowered for the sub. 94

if it helps at all i am running an alpine MRD-M1005 amp at ~12v. im planning to do a seald box firing upward in the trunk (spare tire well)

i have always had alpine type r subs and haven't had any complaints. i have however, always wanted a type x though. when shopping around for one, i came across image dynamics and if i had the money right now the choice would be easy: IDMAX12v.3 but seeing as i have about 300 to spend on the driver i am tied between the alpine and an IDQ15v.2. i can never decide which one i like better while demoing them in the shop so i guess i should match up my equipment with the driver.

the alpine is 500-1000w rms whereas the image dynamics is 600. at 12 volts my amp is rated 700 watts at 2 ohms so it realy comes down to whether i want to overpower the sub a bit, or hav the sub powered a bit less than its full potential.

I couldn't agree more. But if it was up to me I would go with the alpine in a nice ported box. Make sure it a full out custom box desiged by some one who actually knows how to design a box. not just a cabinet maker building your box off of factory specs. With the proper design that one 12 will sound very nice and loud with out sounding boomy or sloppy.

i know how to design/build a box...i've done quite a few in my day. i have 2 12" type r's in a ported box right now and they sound quite boomy. i would keep them and build a new box but i would like to consolidate everything into one sub...i dont need that much bass anyway. i am definately going sealed to get the tightest, most accurate bass i can get...and because its easier .
