i dont think the tach has the anyting to do with the speed sensor.

if you are registered at absoluteprelude, col_korn posted a really good thread about trouble shooting the tach with some great wiring diagrams. the signal runs from the sender unit in your dizzy (thats what was bad with mine) thru a blue wire to your tach.

get an after market tach for multimeter and test the signal at the "tach test connector" located near the top of the shock on the passenger side of the engine bay. its a little dead end, capped off, blue wire.

i took my old dizzy and swapped out the honda oem sender unit into my "distributor king" dizzy and my tach worked perfectly for the first time in a year. no problems since

it is most likely the ICM (ignitor) freaking out.

If you have a friend to swap distributors with for a minute do it and see if it fixes the problem. If not you may have a bad ground, or the wire to the cluster is F'd

The wires are corroded and it's not getting the right voltage. Get to the wires and put new connectors on them, should fix your problem.

Or u can always buy an aftermarket tach.....autometer sells alot of different styles, and all are pretty reliable.Just an idea if all else fails.
