Default Need help, CEL code 17 (VSS) 91 Civic STD...right after swapping to 89' LX gauges.

I just recently switched out my gauge cluster for one with a tachometer that I found in a junkyard for $10 bucks. It was from an 89' Civic LX, and I found out that the wiring is a lot different. So after trying to follow some guidelines I found online and later finding them to have wrong information, I went back to the LX and cut the connectors. Then I just matched the colors up and wired it into my factory harness (because most of or all of the wires are same colors for same command (not completely sure as a few didn't match and high beam indicator nor seat belt light work)).

I now have a code 17 off of the ECU, and the speed sensor is hooked up at the speedometer and I'll check at the trans later, but don't know exactly where to look. I plan to switch out to an Si trans, axles, spindles, brakes, and clutch someday, so maybe in doing that I would solve the VSS problem? I want to fix this car up, I plan to do the DPFI to MPFI swap and the Si trans swap (or possibly the trans from that 89 LX sedan if I can't find an Si), and later who knows?

Thanks for any help,
Zach

Did you get/switch to an electronic VSS? That cluster doesn't run on cable i believe...

the '89 still uses a cable vss, so it should work.

maybe it's just not plugged ALL the way in? have you tugged at it to see that it's secure? do you hear any clicking from the cable flopping around as your speed increases?
