it might be your shift linkage or shift linkage bushings

my beater is like that
replace the main linkage bushings, bitch pin, and inspect the rubber rings that line the lower sleeve
(where the bolt goes through...sorry, brain fart on the real name)

On saturday I ordered a energy suspension shifter bushing kit. Think it will make a difference? Also.. you know how it's stiff when you move the shifter either all the way to the left or all the way to the right? It has a firm feel to the right but not the left. Almost seems like this tranny/linkage was parked in 1st gear all the time. Is it the tranny or the bushings that cause that stiff feel left and right? Do I make any sense?

Yeah, you make sense.

It's just the bushings on your shift linkage, the energy suspension shifter bushing kit should fix the problem .

1.) a shifter that swims around in gear like that is not a victim of bad shifter bushings - it's a symptom of a bad spring pin (bitch pin/devil pin/satan pin/***** pin/etc.) and, occasionally, bad o-rings on the linkage-to-shifter cylinder.

2.) new shifter bushings will make your shifter more solid in a front-to-back direction, but they won't do anything for the side-to-side play as they are not physically connected to the shaft that controls that -

14 is the stabilizer shaft, 13 is the actual shift rod. See number 28? That bastard is in charge of the play between the gearshaft in the transaxle and the shifter in your hand. If it's worn or if the previous owner (or your own dumbass) replaced it with a bolt and nut thinking you'd be okay, there's a lot of "wiggle room" even when the gears are engaged.

Replace the spring pin and your shifter will be a LOT more solid. I promise.

Number 28... Are you supposed to remove that clip thingy and then just slide out that pin in there? If that's what your talking about, that thing seems wedged in there.. is it supposed to slide out with force or screw out?

just tighten up the bolts under the car for ur shifter. and the reason its harder to the right then to the left is because u use the left a lot more, so its more broken in. thats normal and thats how it is with all cars.
