Question for you civic owners....found an all stock 96 civic hx 5 speed about 140,000 miles on it....good body...runs good....@ questions about it....one, does it really get the gas mileage close and above 40 mpg...and 2, it that a pretty good deal? I dont know much about civics....more the accord type....but anyways I'm going to school soon and need a economy car...so is the hx the way to go?

 

it's an excellent model. HOWEVER. stay far away from the CVT models. Do not get one unless it's a manual transmission.

 

Are the CVT's junk? How much for that hx?

 

It's a great car. You didn't say how much it was going for. Just check the kelly blue book for your area.

The only thing holding that engine back over the Y8 is the transmission. Get yourself an EX/Si tranny unless you spend a lot of time on the freeway.

id expect about 4,000ish depending on the condition & the owner
and yes you should get about 40mpg, don't expect any giddy-up though as its an economy model

 

my bad guys....its going for $2000.....has a exhaust leak and cracked windshield....but other than that it is solid.....I may due a few mods like exhaust and ignition stuff.....no intake though cause i need it for the mpg and i dont want an intake to run it rich or anything.....will a 2.25 catback restrict any gas mileage? I want it a tad bit faster without messing up the mpg's....but is the d16y5 even worth putting any money into?

 

Bolt ons will never make your car run rich.

I'd leave the muffler alone, get an ex exhaust manifold/cat and a short ram from ebay.

and a y8 tranny, you'll have a fun daily driver with a throaty intake.

bolt on's like an intake usually increase gas milage.

wouldnt u most likely be running your car a bit leaner since your getting more air with the same amount of fuel.

The minute differences would be compensated for by the ecu, there won't be any rich/lean differences once the ecu adjusts.

regardless all sohc 92-00 civics are ~16 second cars when stock.

One might be a CH faster than the other, but their all slow as ****.

 

take my word for it, and you won't find anybody else on here that has researched that engine more than me. The d16y5 has potential, but you're only going to make good power out of it if you're REALLY REALLLY REALLY trying to. If you're in college, leave it stock.

If you're an engineering student then it's going to be a fun car to play with. Go for MPGs and it's a good platform. It's a very efficient engine that has a lot of potential no matter what direction you want to take it. I wouldn't waste my time with doing the intake/header/exhaust crap. If you DO want to accelerate faster use an ex/si transmission.

So on average they're actually slower than what I thought. About 16.63 seconds in the 1/4 from factory.

I have a 5 spd 00 hx coupe and like it. Right now I have dc 4-2-1 headers, no cat, 2.25 exhause, and a cold air intake. Ill tell you this though im getting horrible gas millage. Im pretty sure its because since im running with no cat (no secondary O2 sensor) my car is in open loop mode causing the bad gas milage. I agree 100% that an ex tranny is one of the best mods to do. I ran it at the track a couple times and my best was an 16.8, dont know if this is decent or not for what it is. also youll notice that there is not a great deal of aftermarket support for the hx (a majority of the time DX/EX parts will work). you found a HX that's in good shape and runs well (no CEL right?) for $2k?
BUY IT.

If you don't tell me where and I will.

the HX is a decent platform to build on. If you don't have a ton of money use the fuel savings to pile up a savings and swap it, or simply drop in the trans like mentioned above.
the only issue with it is the O2 sensor. it uses a 5-wire wideband which tends to cost more than the typical 4-wire used by most hondas.

Running hx for 2k is a steal. Buy it.

 

i dont understand, if you want good gas mileage then dont do anything..especially change the tranny to a shorter geared one. one thing that gives it the god gas mileage that you want it that slow geared tranny

 

Yeah the HX is a good car. I have the CVT in mine and I love it. It's a bit of a pig from a dead stop, but if you're going to just commute and perhaps do a bit of spirited country weekend driving its great for that.

From about 30-60 mph it pulls pretty hard because it's right in the sweet spot of the engine.

But yeah a manual with decent miles in decent shape at a great price? Hard to pass up.
