on a d series engine what is the best way to get the bolts loose for the flywheel? is it a good idea to use a air gun?

Impact is your best bet. For tightening I like to retorque to spec. with blue Loctite. Use a crank pulley holder or screwdriver through the flywheel (I never did figure out how to do the screwdriver method).

Hard to find a 12pt impact socket... just use a regular chrome socket.
