Engine Jumpy under load and rough idle- Please Help!
Hey guys. I have a 00 civic with a k20a2 swap. Last night I was playing around with an srt4 on the interstate. No problems. Went back sonic to get a bite to eat. When I went to leave, I noticed my car was acting really jumpy, kinda like when you are barely holding the gas, but it was doing it under load. It seemed the car was misfiring and hesitating. When i went to put it in neutral to stop the rpms dropped so low that the car died. I managed to get the car home. Today I pulled my spark plugs and they were black, so i changed them hoping it would solve my problem. Well the car seems to act a lil better, but it is still doing it, rough idle, and jumpy. Not sure if its just me, but it seems to be most jumpy around 3k-4k, but thats probably just my mind playing with me. When im driving and I drop it in neutral the rpms drop very very low, and after a min they rise back up to normal.
I was thinking it was a spark problem so I changed the plugs and the problem still exists. I was thinking maybe my fuel pump was going out, but its a brand new walboro 255. I watched my fuel pressure gauge as a rev the motor and fuel pressure is steady so im guessing the pump is fine. Do you guys think that my coil packs need to be replace? I am not sure what else to do. I pump nothing but 93 octane so I dont think it would be a fuel problem. Ive only had the swap running for about 3 months so everything like fuel pump and filter are only a few months old. Let me know what you think.
Thanks for reading and any help you can offer!

i was just wondering, if it was a bent valve, wouldnt it throw a code? I am not throwing any codes. I just really hope its just the coil packs.
no it wont throw a code. you might quite possibly bent a valve.. were you over revving? Do a compression test and you'll know if you bent a valve.
see thats the funny thing becuase i have never overreved or misshifted. After i raced the srt4 the car was fine. I drove about 3 miles to the nearest sonic with no problems. It wasnt until i went to leave that my car was acting up.
I am going to do a comp test tomorrow to see if that can shed some light on this situation. Thanks for the help bro.

well today i went out to crank it becuase i was gonna try to drive it to school. On a cold start it idled really bad. Everytime i tried to give it gas it would choke and act like it wanted to die. After a few mins it seemed to clear up for the most part. Still wasnt perfect, but i could accually rev it up normally. Im wondering if that is do to a coil pack or multiple coil packs going out. Any idea. I went ahead and ordered new coil packs so they should be in either tomorrow or thursday.

It could be your coil pack. Have them checked at the nearest dealer or Honda Shop. Also have the timing checked you may have slipped a tooth on the belt this would cause some of your problems.
Sorry for the noob response Im just used to my B18 and just got into my a EP3 about a week ago so the K is new to me. My B18 skiped a tooth and I was haveing the same problem. But could it be that the chain tensioner has gotten loose therefore causing his problem. In old chain driven V-8 this is common.
Sorry again for the noob response.

It is a possiblity that the tensioner got loose but i highly doubt it. It's koo about the response, i didn't know anything bout the K's till i started getting really into them. we all have to start somewhere. But with his description of the way it sounds and reacts it sounds like a bent valve but i'm not 100% sure. Only way he'll know is if he gets a compression test.
well guys im 98% sure i found the problem. I guess due to all my racing lately, i accually ripped the tranny ground off the chasis. I was wiggling around today and noticed the tranny ground is ripped in half. Im pretty sure this will fix all my problems. I will deff let you guys know, becuase if this ground can cause all these problems, it would be a very good thing to know!
yes it would cuz your symptons sound so similar to a bent valve but after you said you wasn't high revving, or missed shift kinda threw me off. Let me know i'll definately be adding to my notes.
yea thats why i was so stumped becuase i have never reved too high or missed a gear and was gonna be really pissed if a major problem like that happened out of nowhere. Ill be sure to let you know how it goes. If the rain holds out i should have it fixed tonight. Good thing i got those coil packs for a great deal or i would have been pissed. hehe
well, i replaced the engine ground and it is still doing the same thing. It seems like the drivability is better now, but when im driving and put it in neutral the rpms drop so low and the car wants to die. Im still waiting on my coilpacks so maybe that will fix this problem. iono
You have kpro? Get a compression test at least that shouldn't be expenisve at all unless you know how to do it yourself. At least with a compression test it will tell you a lot.
yea i know i need to do that next, im just scared to death. I am trying to fix everything else it might be before i have to do that. If i see 210 210 210 60 or something im gonna ****. Lol. I guess I have no choice.
oh and yea i have kpro
oh and yea i have kpro
lol. i would to.. cuz it just means more money to fix car.
i would say do a datalog but i'd get the compression checked before then. You didn't change anything in the kpro?

nah man thats was kinda crazy. It showed no signs of anything wrong after I raced the guy or anything. I drove about 3 miles, parked my car, and figured everything was fine. I didnt notice anything wrong untill a few hours later when i went to leave, and i was trying to drive and it started acting up.
a few weeks ago i raced a guy and just after we got done i put my car into 6th and noticed my car started doing the same things its doing now. I put it into neutral, reved it up a few times, and then put it back in 6th and everything seemed fine. So i figured it has to be something loose, or something going out, which is what made me think that ground had to be it. But its still acting up. Now i wonder if a coilpack is just acting up and is on its last leg or something.

well guys it ended up being the coilpacks. Im guessing when i ripped that ground out it might have sent a surge to the coilpacks and damaged them somehow. Oh well. Seems to be fine for now. Ill have to drive it around a more tomorrow to make sure its perfect, but seems to be all good. Thanks everyone for the feedback.
