Hi.. Does anyone knows any good DIY guides for installing spark plugs and what tools I need? Is it hard to do the job or should I take it to a mechanic shop and pay $30 to change them? I bought some NGK spark plugs..

The mechanic charges for half hour labour..so $30 in Canada. Is it a rip off to pay $30 for spark plugs installation?

I'm afraid I may mess up something when installing spark plugs..so if I had a Honda DIY guide for changing spark plugs would be great.

 

lol yes...all you do is pull of the wires, remove the old ones, gap the new ones put the new ones in and put the wires back on.

 

I'm just reading instructions at NGK website and it says "Thread Diameter=18 ø mm" and "Cast Iron Cylinder Head (lb-ft.)=25.3~32.5" .

I recommend you buy a gapping tool to check the spark plug gap, and adjust as necessary (I don't fully agree with that link regarding not having to check the gap. Better safe than sorry.)

Tips:
Do one spark plug at a time. Grasp the spark plug wire at the base of the rubber boot to pull out; you may have to wiggle it back and forth a little.

When putting in the new spark plug, just use the spark plug socket and extension without the rachet, and screw it in by hand first. Don't force anything, if it doesn't screw in easily, stop and take it back out and try again. You do not want to cross-thread it. After it is finger-tight, then use the rachet on the extension and socket, and turn it about a quarter turn. (You don't want it too tight or too loose.)

I like to put a small dab of di-electric grease on the inside of the spark plug wire boot, to help removal of the wire the next time around.

 

you can even get them pre gaped. get a helmes manual, it will be your bible haha jk just dont pay 30 for this, if I was anywhere near you I would do it free of charge...best of luck to you

Take out, replace.

It's not rocket science. There's a reason no one makes a write-up for it. Likely because my 8 year old cousin did the plug on my Dirtbike a while back.

 

Just dont overtighten them. make sure they are snug

Ohh yea the best feeling in the world has got to be when someone stripps the threads for the spark plug holes.

Anti-seize is anti-seize. There's not going to be any difference except in price.

I don't even use anti-seize on my spark plugs.

You can buy enough at the counter in a little tube labled "Anti-Seize" If you really care. it's about $ .50

I use just about Permatex everything since its what my autoparts store stocks

 

Sorry about the stupid questions I'm asking guys..I just want to do the job right. Another question I have is how long does the ratchet extension has to be to reach the spark plug?

 

it's okay, we all start somewhere.

You want any basic ratchet extension, 6-12 inches should do it.

 

Just make sure you gap them and do it yourself. Very easy, just have someone who knows what they are doing to help you and make sure you tightent them to specs.

 

Hey guys..So I managed to change the spark plugs and I took some pictures of the old ones. I know you can tell how the engine is running by looking at the spark plugs. Should I be concerned about anything????

You should be concerned about that.

EDIT:
Most people change the dizzy rotor, cap, and plug wires too when they do the spark plugs...

Might wanna do that too, I go w/ bosch wires, a lot of pple on H-T complain about them and will tell u to get NGK but I've always used bosch wires w/ NGK V-Power's on Hondas and I never had a problem.

Also, next time you buy plugs, buy the $4 NGK V-Power plugs from autozone/advance auto/pep boys - that's OEM and obviously a lot cheaper than you paid (30 &gt; 16).

 

Those are my old spark plugs. I bought the car about 2 years ago and I'm not sure when the previous owner changed spark plugs. I did put NGK V power spark plugs.
The new ones are gapped properly. The ones in the picture not sure if they're gapped properly but they are not being used anymore

Do you know any good torque wrenches that are accurate???
