I just picked up a 95 Civic DX and am looking into what kinda swap I wanna do. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna end up goin with a JDM B18B, but my biggest question at this point is whether or not the tranny I have in my car will mount directly to the B18B or will I have to get a new Transmission as well as the motor.

If anyone can answer this question for me, that'd be awesome. Thanks.

 

You'll need a hydro b-series tranny to match up to the b-series engine.

for different series engines no transmissions are compatible without custom bracket/adapterplates.

I recommend you find a used gsr/b16 tranny to match you b18b. It will be a fantastic performance upgrade since you're already headed that route. It's a world of difference compared to the stock LS tranny with the much longer gears.

 

The gsr\b16 trans have nice short gears which will let you accelerate much better than if you had the stock B18b trans, (the LS), which is pretty long and sluggish.

 

What if you put a b16 intake mainfold on the b18 ls will that change anything in performance?

I love it! Common car, common motor, and you know what you what to do. If I ever had to go DOHC, the B18B would be it. Yeah, keep an eye open for a B16 tranny.

It wont fit.

 

I suggest going with a gsr tranny but that is mainly becuase that is the only tranny I have experience with. You may want to opt for a limited slip differential equipped transmission though, if you want to buy one and be done with it.

I woudln't recommend the B16/ITR trans if you do a lot of highway driving as it'll rape ur gas mileage.

GSR is a nice settlement between power and good gas mileage.

If you're smart you can get a B16/ITR and swap out the 5th gear and drop an LS 5th in there. It'll be slightly shorter than the typical LS 5th though due to the shorter final drive of the ITR or the B16 trannies.

I wouldn't recommend putting a B16 IM on even if it did fit - the the B16 IM is designed to make power at high RPM, the LS doesn't make much power above 6.5k as far as I'm concerned, it's not a real big "racing" motor - it's much like the B20 but doesn't suffer as much from the revving as the B20 does. The point is it's not a winder motor like the B16, GSR, CTR, or ITR, so the B16 IM wouldn't be smart option for power even if it was direct bolt-on.

 

^^ So true, except to get better gas mileage you need a different final drive, not so much the 5th gear.

Ls 5th and final drive will help.
