What up, H-T? I have a 2000 Si with 59,000 miles on it, and it has been boosted with a Greddy kit for about 15k miles. I've been told that for b16's, you need to change the timing belt @ 60k. Is this true? And if so, should I change out the water pump too, or is it ok to keep it until the next belt change?

 

check your owners book in the glovebox, im pretty sure it states 105k.

 

Timing belts should be changed at 105,000 miles or 8 years, whichever comes first. Since a model year 2000 car would be assembled in mid-late 1999 or early 2000 (i.e 7-8 years ago), you should look into having it done some time this year or next, even though you only have 59,000 on the odo. The age seems to be more of a factor in timing belt deterioration than the mileage.

Edit: In addition, don't change the timing belt without also changing the water pump, cam seals, all 3 accessory belts, etc. You don't want to have to tear it all the way down again in another 2 years when the water pump starts weeping, or leaking cam seals soak the timing belt in oil. We also change the tensioner (if needed), valve cover gasket, valve cover seal washers, and cam end plug with all timing belt jobs. You might as well do it all at once for preventative maintenance while it is apart, to avoid having to do it later.

I totally agree.

It should be fine, just wait until 90k miles or when you have the turbo parts back out again to change the timing belt/waterpump.

It will be a necessary upkeep with an FI application.

 

Great advice, Targa250R! Thank you for the info--I wasn't aware about the valve cover gasket, cam seals, etc. What would you normally charge for labor to do that job? I'm asking b/c I have a couple of mechanics, but I don't want to pay a damn arm and a leg, you know?

 

Changing it sooner won't hurt either, I had a timing belt go out at 75k on my Integra I used to have.

We charge 4 hours labor for B-series.
