Hi Guys,

Happy new year!.

Can someone suggest me when is the right time to change a timing belt for my 2000 Honda Civic VP. I just crossed 90,000 miles on the car; Manual suggests to do it at 105,000 miles under normal conditions / after 7 years.

Q1. should i wait 15,000 more miles or should i do it now?
Q2. what other replacements are suggested during a timing belt change?
Q3. any idea how much it would cost!
Q4. any suggestions about who is the best bet in terms of price and quality who do the replacement?

i think between 600-900 bones

well i guess a honda dealership should do it well, but any reputable garage can do it.

When you change your timing belt people usually change their water pump too!

Yeah, get it done. All the timing belt kits i have seen come with a tensioner anyway so thats ideal. Replacing the water pump at the same time is also good practice.

Between $600-$900!!! Are you out of your mind??
For my timing belt and water pump, oem parts and including labor was
$110.

Do it now. If you wait and the timing belt snaps you are going to be pissed. The piston will hit and bend the valves, ruining the head of the engine. Get a HONDA OEM Timing belt and water pump. I know the honda dealers in Jersey charge about 5-600$ for everything.....but even so, thats much less than the cost of a new engine.

did mine at 90 on my 2000 civic and now due again....i am at 183K will do it myself....dealer charges $400-$600 in my area. Had one go on my 87 and yes it will bend the valves as stated.

Iv been quoted between $200 and $900 by different shops. I just ended up doing it myself. The parts are relatively cheap, especially considering how dangerous it is if/when a timing belt snaps.

to change the water pump or not to change the water pump that is the question. @92000 mi i decided to change the belt. surprisingly it was in perfect condition. the water pump feels the same as the new one. do i put out the $94(dealer cost) and change the pump or do i risk having to fight the crank shaft pulley bolt again?

I've always changed mine at around 100-120K miles.

The first one, on my Civic, I believe the Honda dealer charged me like $560 for timing belt, all accessory belts, water pump, and labor. They also gave me a free loaner car for 2 days. They said that it was their policy to provide a loaner on TB jobs, but I'm not sure if all Honda dealers do that. I couldn't be happier with their service. The price was right around normal from what I've seen around here.

The second one, on my CRV, I did myself. It took me a solid 8 hours, but I ran into a few problems.

I'm contemplating doing my gsr next, once it cools off a bit. The CRV wasn't as bad as I was afraid it would be.

To the guy who had it done for $110: That's not normal. You either found a supercheap shop, or had someone do it in a home garage. I think book on a TB is like 6 hours at $50/hr, which is $300 just for labor. Congrats on getting a deal, but I've never heard of one that cheap.

I have a 2000 civic too. Replaced the belt and pump at 90 since this seems to be the majic number when it starts to squeak and squeal a bit.
Now I have 269,000 plus on it and need to "finally" replace it again. I took a big chance I know. But what a champ it is, running so long!
Yes, it has been squeaking for some time now(well over 170 thou). Got to get it in soon.
Yes, cost me 600 dollars the first time. This time I'll try a local import garage guy in my small town. Let you know.

I'm about to do mine this week...I ordered all gates parts

Water pump
Timing belt
Tensioner
All accessory belts
and a felpro valve cover gasket kit including plug seals and bolt seals...

All of this came out to $105 from rockauto.

I'm doing it myself...

My acc belts are a little sketchy right now so it was worth it to go ahead and replace those since you have to take them off anyways...

I have a new valve cover I painted with red wrinkle I'm putting on so I'm def not going to use old VC cover gaskets if I'm taking it off...

Here is an article about how to do it yourself....I say 105 dollars and do the work yourself it's worth changing all that stuff I ordered since it all comes off anyways.

Read alllllll the comments on that diy write up because he missed a few things and there was some good suggestions...especially the angle iron breaker bar.

Got it done, and done correctly.
$400. Got a good deal.
Not too bad. Didn't have to fuss.
They had trouble (as it turned out) with a bolt. They had to cut and drill it out. I would've never been able to do that on my own.
Up to 270,000 miles on it now.
Go Go Civic Go.
