It may help, depending upon the condition of the transmission. Many people find that using GM Synchromesh Friction Modified fluid helps alleviate grinding symptoms.

Some people swear by syncromesh or some other stuff, but it is just a temporary fix. I know it's way more cost effective to just try the fluid first, but you're better off just having the synchro set replaced.

You should just change the fluid yourself and see if it helps any. It doesn't take much time at all.

If you put Honda MTF, it'll stay. If you go GM syncromesh w/ friction modifier, it may help, but its like putting a band aid on it, its only temporary.

Start shopping for a new tranny, Ds go for next to nothing anyways.

I'm with him, D-series trannies can be had for 200 bucks, much cheaper to buy a used one than to rebuild it.

Perform this quick test on your car. Idle it, and shift into first, take your hand off the shifter, and see if the shifter creeps or jumps forward once you begin to clutch out. If this happens, its just bearings, most notably the ISB and countershaft case bearing, those are the two that seem to have the most problems. Around a $70 fix for the bearings. Just so you don't go junking the tranny right away, you could still get something out of it.

My 97 civic has 170 on its clock. I bought a whole 98 engine and trans for 350. I separated the trans and swapped it into my car because the original trans was whining and had a bad third gear grind. Now I am thinking of having that trans rebuilt and bolting it onto the replacement motor and possibly supercharging it.
