daily driver
I'm not sure how type-R related this question will be, so if this is the wrong forum to ask I appologize.
I own a 2001 type R and currently it's my only car. I love driving this car, but considering how rare the car is these days I'd like to not put so many miles on it anymore (plus the theft rate is not helping). Also, I went to the track with her once this summer and it was just awesome, so I'm thinking of making her just a weekend/track car.
So now I'm looking for a daily driver that's also fun. Since I already have a FWD car I was thinking of getting an AWD or a RWD. The reason I'm asking on this forum is because I'd like to get some opinions from other type R owners since you guys know how this car drives.
From looking around I'm thinking either a 2000-2001 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS (which I can get for about 10,000 canadian) or a 1999 E36 M3 (which would be around $19000 canadian). If I got the subaru i'd most likely turbo it later on.
Anyway... i just wanted to know what you guys think of those two cars (maybe you've owned either one, and how they'd compare with the type-r) and which do you think would be a better option. Also, if you have other ideas for daily drivers that would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion JjuuN R... the only reason I didnt really consider the S2000 is because to me the engine seems to be kinda similar to the type-R's... high reving engine that needs to be pushed to get any power out of it. Plus I'm not a huge fan of roadsters and convertibles, but I'll look around for one and maybe test drive it to see exactly how it feels.
Oh and the other thing... I'd like to use the car for the winter as well and go wherever else I need to go (including the possibility of a camping trip or 2 over the summer).

It's tough man, this has been beaten to death here...
Dollar for dollar, you aren't going to find a suitable daily driver that you'll be happy with.
I would look at something like an FD, s2k.. depends on your taste, budget and what your goals are.

M3's are nice, very driver oriented like the R, with a lot more usable power down low.
I would look into some used EVO 8's if your price range is in the high teens. They are coming down in price pretty good these days.

I think we're supposed to get the EVO X, but that's gonna be a lot of money.</TD></TR></TABLE>
More like A LOT of money. Indeed.

OP, i like your original idea of an impreza, very clean cars i drive my cousins 99 rs and i like the way it handles, def a plus when we go snowboarding too! if i were gonna get another car that's what i'd get. just my .02
I second the 2.5 RS idea. AWD will be better for you, since it snows where you live, and it'll be cheaper to keep/maintain than the bimmer.
Of those choices, I would vote Subaru. But what's wrong with getting a DC2/4 or EF/EG/EJ Civics? Great MPG and reliability, and can be made fun to drive for cheap.

Thanks for all the replies guys... seeing that e36 pictures reminds me why i like those cars, although the subaru would probably be a more practical choice so thanks crxma22 for the info about your cousin's car.
In response to the DC2 or civic idea... there's really nothing wrong with getting one of those cars, I'd just like to try out a different car other than a Honda and something that's not a FWD.

IMO, nothing really can compare a ITR that can both a good performance daily drive NA reliable car.
Miata, S2K , MRS , are really good handling FR / MR car for good choice. However you mentioned Convertible is not your taste.
E36 M3 Chassis rigid and Suspension is awesome ( Being a former owner), but as a whole I still don't think it's a good reliable daily drive car due to many electrical problem.
2.5 RS is really under performance compare to all the cars I mentioned in my point of view. If you gonna put turbo why not get a used 4WD Mitsu/ Subraru.
RX-8 is a good choice for you I think, FR format, non-convertible, good handling, and the price. Its NA Rotary is more reliable than the old FD motor...although can't compare to the engine power.
Again, it's really hard to have a Daily Drive performance fun car that can both satisfied... like an ITR.

the e36 M is comparable to an ITR, I'd shoot for something more civilized that's maintenance friendly.
have you thought about an is300 maybe? I just picked up an 06 RSX-S as my DD, it's a lovely compliment to the R.

No problem, find one and take it for a spin, they're a pretty fun sedan.
