Default Whats the law with swapping in CA nowadays?

My friend got a 90 crx si and was wondering if he can swap a gsr motor in it or a b16? He haved called the state ref many times and they give him many answers. Some say yeah you can swap it and still be smog legal and street legal and some of them say no it has to be another si engine can't be a different type. Wtf?? Is this true now about CA laws? That your not allowed to swap in any other different motors beside the one you currently got? Thanks for the help.

He can swap in any engine as long as it will pass smog and is a '90 and newer engine.

true, as long as it is smog legal.. you can pass it and never worry about police pullin you over for it. since his 90 crx isnt OBD2.. hes lucky. as long as he sticks with OBD1 emission equipment... he will be good to go.

you guys sure about this? He call the state ref and they told him to pass smog he needs to swap in a 90 si motor that is identical to the one he have. They told him that he won't pass smog if he swap in a later year motor like a 94 gsr or a b16. Is this true? Or state ref is fukin with him? Thanks.

That's crock of ****! My friend just got his '92 EG swapped with a USDM GSR B18C1 motor, went to the ref, got sign off and voila, new registration and smog legal vehicle. Make sure after the swap with a USDM motor, he puts all the stock parts back on before you get it inspected and you don't one at least one aftermarket part installed.

A coworker just dropped a prelude engine into his accord..He just went to the right person and they helped him pass his smog..as long as you pass smog you're ok.

yeah thats what i told my friend and i knew it too if you swap out a old engine for new engine it has to pass smog. He keep telling me that it won't even if he swap because he said that state ref told him that and some other smog shop told him that also So there isn't no new rule for swapping in CA yet? Thanks.
