Default Help - turn signal problems

Thanks in advance for any replies!

I'm having problems with my turn signals - they're not functioning properly. The other day after making a left turn (signal obviously on), my turn signal never turned off after I completed the turn. I clicked it into the off position and still it was blinking left. I switched it to the right, left and off positions and still nothing it continued and continues to blink on the left side ONLY. I've checked and actually replaced all the bulbs (directional/front/rear am I missing other bulbs?) and still nothing. The hazards DO work. I've checked the turn signal/hazard relay and all looks good there. I've checked all fuses and those are good as well. I'm just not sure what else I could do to trouble shoot it. I'm trying to avoid taking it to a shop, but if it is a faulty turn signal switch I may just have to. Any other suggestions that I could do myself and any ideas as to what it could be?

Generally, on many cars when the turn signal does not stop, it is due to the "turn signal switch cancel cam" that needs to be replaced. On certain Hondas, it is called just that; but, on the '94 Accord, I think they call it a Body Switch (#13 in this picture). It may be this switch that needs replacement.

Here is San Leandro Honda's link:

There is a chance it is the combo switch (#15), but I think it is #13. Here is an Autozone link regarding the combo switch, which is held in with two screws once you get things off:

Like I said, it may just be the body switch (#13) instead of the combo switch (# 15). Since your car has an airbag, it may be somewhat of a biatch.

Thanks! I was reading another post on this and they mentioned the body switch as the possible culprit. One person said they changed it out in 10 minutes. It seems easy enough, but then again I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to repairing cars so I'm not sure how hard or easy this will be if I try it on my own (especially because I do have an air bag that can be a major pain like you said).

Would you suggest I just bring it into a shop? How involved is the process if I tried it myself?

Also... should have mentioned this in my first post, but I've had issues with my turn signals for about a year now... it's never been stuck on one side, however I've gotten the fast ticking noise after signaling and turning it off (don't remember if the signals were flashing fast or at all, at the time of the ticking or not)and at one point the signals went completely out, to return to normal two days later. Does this help to pinpoint either the body switch or combo switch?

Hold off a little bit, I'll see if I can find out if the airbag may or may not pose a problem. It may actually be very easy. I'm a little tied up right now. Maybe someone else may be able to chime in, in the mean while.

You may want to check out an independent shop, they may be able to find a simpler cause, as you mention intermittant problems with the turn signals.

It could also be either one or both switches, since it has been completely out before, and also has not turn off when it did work.

Yeah, the airbag module gets in the way to replace either switches. The airbag module is also held in with TORX screws. Unless you have a repair manual, and feel confident, then you may want to have someone else check it out. Good luck.

I actually found pretty detailed instructions regarding the removal of the air bag, but it was for a civic so I'm not sure how alike it is to the accord (may very well be the same)... still not sure if I want to go at it myself though.

Any ideas of how much this may cost if brought to a shop?

Actually, the design of many car components are very similar if not the same between the different Honda/Acura models. It only makes sense for Honda and any car manufacturer, as there are cost savings in R & D, manufacturing, etc.

I don't have any idea what will ultimately be the cost at a shop.

This site also carries some parts for your car if you decide to do it yourself:

For parts, you may be able to find some things at a salvage yard if you want to save some money.

Just wanted to give an update - the problem was my turn singnal switch (#15). The little plastic piece inside it that slides up and down when you use your turn signal broke somehow and was stuck on the side that makes the signals blink left (hence the reason for my left turn signal never going off) I finally gave and had it diagnosed and had them install the piece as well. There was no need to remove the steering column, air bag etc when replacing just the combo switch. He took it apart and put it all back together in 10 min top! It was just two screws and out it came (after removing the plastic coverings on the steering wheel). Something I definitely could've done myself (I know for next time though!) Thanks for you help though!
