Default Need advice on drive train problem.....

Just picked up my third Accord. 94 Ex Coupe automatic trans, much nicer than the 86 and 92 I had previously.....the leather doesnt hurt either.

I got it for a decent price, and I am beginning to realize why.....

About a hundred miles after I got it, it started to act up around 2000-2500 rpm, in all gears. It would start chugging just ever so slightly. If you laid on the pedal, it went away, and the car accelerated as I think it should. Vtec works fine(from what I can tell). Trans shifts a little hard, but Ive read thats somewhat normal for these cars. I was thinking that it might be EGR or bad fuel filter after searching for similar problems, but dont wanna just start throwing parts at it. After around 300 miles now the chugging is getting worse, and I'm starting to fear the worst....trans problems(the fluid is obviously new, so I dont know if it was neglected before), or even something in the motor. Vtec is new to me, but Ive learned alot here, just no first hand experience.

Any info or direction would be greatly appreciated....

Thanks.....

Could there be CEL codes without the light being on?

What do you mean chugging? I think I have the same problem with mine (but h22). When I'm going uphill and it shifts it'll be at 2000 rpm to 2500, then back to 2000 then up to 2500 until I push in the gas more.

It feels more like im running outta gas or losing spark. Sounds like yours cant make up its "mind" what gear to go into, unless you "force" it by laying into the pedal?

I would if I had one. Can I pull the codes with the paper clip trick, and just count the flashes of the CEL? I just got the car, so I really dont know all the ins and outs....hell im not even sure if its obd1 or 2.....

thanks for your time and input though....

Could be a fuel problem.....

If your car has the original motor it is OBD1

exactly.....sounds like EGR ports need a good cleaning. There is a great write up on this in the Accord FAQ section

Thanks guys, I woulda replied sooner, but my noob status owns me.....maxed out my five posts a day. Kinda a pita, but I can see why it is necessary.

EGR huh? I thought that might be it, but wasnt quite sure, and wanted to find out if anyone had the exact same symptoms as I do. Looking through the FAQ, there is also an EGR "block-off" how to, what are your guys thougts on doing this instead? It seems to make sense, but I always like to get the most information possible.

If I do clean the egr runner and ports, how much do I have to worry about getting the carbon down the holes? I know the less the better, but do I have to go crazy sucking out every last little bit?

Should I go ahead and replace the valve since I have everything apart already, or will a good cleaning do? Any thing else I should look for or consider doing while I have it all apart?

Thanks again!!

Nate

most of the time a good cleaning will do the job......but at the dealership we always suggest a new EGR. I mean they only run what.....like 50 bucks? Not to mention it might help you pass your next emissions/inspections test.

I hear ya, ill get it apart and see how funky it is.....

As for emissions, it JUST passed...no problem(but it wasnt "chuggin" nearly as bad then), and we have fairly strict tests here(dyno and sniffer). Thats why I was kind of unsure of the EGR system being the fault.

But yeah, I'll pull the runner and check it out..... Thanks again LocO
