Is a hybrid really worth it???
I currently have a 94 Ls with 170k on it, so i need to either do an engine swap or hydrid it. I've been reading a lot on keeping the Ls block for torque, then putting on the grs head for vtec, and then a turbo...What do you all think
IF you have the means i would honestly do a b20 block and b18c5 head -- that setup is just soooo nice. (then turbo)
otherwise perhaps buy a new b18b and turbo it, i know hondas last forever, but i wouldnt turbo a 170k ls block...

perhaps build up your block with new pistons and rods... then put a b16 or b18c head on it. That would be preferred anyway, because you can't rev very high on the stock LS rods.

The most economical solution would be obviously keep using the motor and turbo that.. probably not the safest though. personally i'd rebuild your existing motor..build up the bottom end, boost it.. P+P all that nice stuff. Nothing beats a built motor.

I'd strongly reccomend against LS/VTEC, it's just a fad

if you keep this engine and rebuild, re-sleve it as well. afaik those stock sleves aren't good for much boost, and then you add on 170k miles and you are asking for trouble.

I'd strongly reccomend against LS/VTEC, it's just a fad, and it's unreliable (no offense to you LS/VTEC ppl and I know theres plenty out there running strong)

how come everyone says that with a high mileage car (like mine too at 165000) you need to buy a new engine? I've had people tell me that because I have so many miles I need a new engine, but mine still pulls hard, only lost a step or two since it was new and still screams when the vtec engages. Unless you're racing for money or something or you have a helluva lot of cash to blow to gain like a half second on your times, is it really worth it? And don't these engines run for a ridiculously long time? Unless there's something wrong with it already shouldn't it be fine? I don't really know a lot about it, so some insight as to why people say to buy a new engine would be helpful.

You have'nt told us what you want to do with the car, do you want a reliable daily driver, a weekend warrior that isnt relied on for getting you to work/school, a 1/4 mile monster or and SCCA monster.
A stock LS motor can be made ok quick for a good chunk of money, it doesnt have the following or the parts availability of the VTEC motors. If you plan on going for a low boost turbo setup, rebuilding the bottom end of the B18B (new bearing's, new pistons, rings etc.) to stock would be ok due to there low compression from the factory, anything more than 8-10 psi and I would recommend forged pistons and rods. I could go on for hours so I thinks its best you respond with the things you want out of your car.
