Default vtec vs non vtec

looking at a D16Z6 head how do u tell the diff from a non vtec from nonvtec..because im getting one for my civic and i just need to know what im looking for before i buy it.

all z6 heads are vtec...

i know that but when its just the head u are looking at ...what is on it that tells me it is a D16Z6 head

right the solenoid is the number one key thing to look for. even if that is gone there will be a series of slots or holes on the IM side of the head near the corner. also if you can look at it with the VC off you can look for 5 cam lobes per cylinder and a cam tower brace with four spring loaded caps along its length.

and not sure about this one but i'll put it and hopefully a z6 expert can correct me if i am wrong but i think it should have p28 stamped on it somewhere. if thats the right number then you can have as little as the stripped-bare head casting and still know for sure what it is.

no it doesnt not allways mine didnt
also the bottom left of the block there is an engine stamp if its is it will say d16z6

If the spark plugs are closer to the exhaust side, its a vtec head. If the spark plugs are closer to the intake side, its a non vtec head. the vtec heads have a "tube" for the spark plugs to go into, the non vtec heads dont.
