timing belt , 87 2.0 injected
Hi all,
I think the timing belt just went, I was going a steady speed around 70-80kph and I heard a backfire type noise and then my speed started decreasing, there was an existing problem something to do with a timing advance that made the rev fall if held at 2200rpm or a bit lower/higher, I had thought it was that, so I let go of the gas and pressed on it again, but it didn't work, speed and rev kept decreasing. When that didn't work I pressed in the clutch and then the engine stalled. The engine wouldn't start after that.
After opening up we saw that the timing belt was pretty loose. When it happened, I didn't hear any strange noise other than the backfire before the rev started going down. I didn't hear a bunch of terrible noise at all at any point. Is it safe to assume that the car is worth fixing (if everything is scrapped it's not really worth while)? Do I need a new head? Are my valves finished for sure? I was under the impression that there would be a lot of noise if that were the case, but then again my exhaust is pretty loud (need new manifold and also the muffler piece).
Anyone have this happen on a similar car (87 2L injected prelude)? Advice, tips? I don't know that much at this point.
Thanks for any help .. !!

Ok so two people helped me out and we changed the timing belt and the tensioner, the car started but now it doesn't sound or run the same as before. I guess I could be losing compression now.
