pic request of single stage paint vs. base/clear coat paint
preferrably in red, I will be doing my first paint job soon on my rio red crx, I would like to know if my first full paint job should be single stage or professionally done.
thanks
ps, if this should be in the a/c forum please move

I actually painted a Probe Rio Red. Some girl I used to work with. Its PPG Base/Clear.
Pics make the paint look blurry. Came out pretty nice

came out good, whats the difference in appearance between that and single stage? and how many coats of each did u use there?
really there is no difference in appearance on solid colors, on metallics you will see that base/clear v/s single stage has alot more depth, kinda like you're looking thru magnifying glass
I like the single stage I guess because I am new to painting and it is so easy to use. But I am being told you can't wet sand it and I did. I noticed it lost a little shine but nothing big. It was also the only way to get the Orange peal out (witch I don't know why I had)

For a first timer I say go with a base/clear. you realy cant go wrong. If you mess up or have alot of orange peel you can wetsand and buff it out.

orange peel occurs within the clear coat. it has a lot of ways of showing up. if the guns tip isn't fine enough. if the air/fluid ratio isn't set correct. your technique combined with how fast or how slow your hardener works. a lot of things.
but it is easy to fix if you laid a few coats of clear on. just wetsand with nothing lower than 1000 . it's going to look like you messed it up, but just hit it with some compound and shine!

Not always.
But I like the single stage and I use the OMNI. It will be a lot cheaper and you only have to lay just the paint not the paint and clear.
look for my thread I did on the single stage wing I painted.

yea the one where u painted the maroon wing, is it metallic or regular single stage?
and I kinda want to learn how to spray base/clear, if I do I will use NAPA premium paint. my ex-girlfriends dad has owned a body shop that does custom paint for 27 years and he said that stuff is really good for the price, or maybe I'll break down and buy PPG

ppg has good products but i have been working with paints awhile and my personal prefference is dupont chroma system, cost more than ppg but i like it more..... as for single stage... its great for a dd and you can wet sand and buff single stage too.
WHites and reds and solid colors doo look very similiar.... solid color evo's are painted single stage. when buying a single stage i recomend buying a urathane based not enamel. you can sand the orange peel out it just takes a little longer to sand and if it does get dull after a year or so a quick buff job will make it look brand new
