obd2+turbo+emissions=FAIL! obd2 turbo guys plz help!
ok i want to know how the people who have obd2 cars with turbo setups pass emissions (if applicable)??? you cant convert to obd1 because the scan tool wont read nothing and its illegal to put in obd1 stuff in obd2... so lmk what you all us if you do have emissions thx
Move somewhere where they dont need smog. HAHA. JUST KIDDING!! Not much you can do unless you put it back to stock for smog or find a way around the legal testing. Good luck!!
naw i dont wanna put it back to stock.... maybe thats not a bad idea! do that every 2 years..... hmmm idk thats still kind of a hassle... but ya the town 20 miles up from me doesnt have to do emissions im thinkin about gettin an apt up there or sayin i stay wit my aunt in ill since they dont have emissions... idk anyone that has by passed this though???
Naw, no one wants to mess with changing anything for smog. but... unless you have a hook up to do an illegal smog check, there arent too many options. Heres a thread if you wanna take a look. Its CALI though, but gets you an idea.

We should start with some numbers, from the test results.
In CA we have California Air Resources Board. For short it's CARB. Carb numbers that are assigned to the aftermarket parts after the CARB has done it's testing to show that the emissions are not above the limit set by them.
In your case you need to find info from the state. Like is there a testing center that can certify aftermarket parts on your car. We in CA have referee centers that we go to to get swap's and troublesome cars legally smogged with BAR labels.
You might need to up the fuel pressure with high Nox numbers or you might need to lower fuel pressure to lower HC and CO. There are more tricks/adjustments that can help. Another base map can be loaded that might help too...etc...
I will tell you that I have passed turbo cars before so it can be done.

I am in the same boat as you. I have recently turboed my 96 Prelude and I want to get it tuned but damn the obd2. I have thought about swapping over the ECU, injectors, and turning boost off for a day or so before I get my emissions done but it's just a hassle I don't really wanna deal with. I emailed Hondata today to see if they have any alternatives for us obd2 cars, so we'll see what they say.
I just wanna get my car tuned already and be able to pass emissions or move to a place without emission. Having new injectors just waiting to go in, isn't really helping the situation either. lol

I'm curious about this too...I went through a similar issue in CT, I put the car back to 100% stock...passed emissions, put the kit back on and don't have to worry about for two years...major PIA, but I can't see any other way of doing it...
does anybody know if an AEM EMS is obd2 compatable? that would solve the issue of needing OBD2 compliance and still being able to tune for the turbo?
edit: I put this back to 100% stock because I could not get the OBD2 computer to perform/pass all it's readiness tests
if it is OBD1....then as the smogman says you can make adjustments to make a turbo car pass a sniffer test...but I think the OP is talking about a OBD2 emissions test?

nick, the ems can be ordered for obd2 cars...I was wondering if it can be setup to pass emissions here in RI/CT or any other states that perform an OBD2 diagnostic test as the emission test...I don't know if the AEM supports all the readiness monitors that a state emissions test will look for...I know that a k-pro will (dan's car) but I'm still looking to see if an ems will work
yes the aem replaces the stock obd2 computer...what i was wondering (and still haven't gotten a straight answer for) was whether or not the aem supports obd2 readiness monitors and code retrieval...because if it did, then that would solve the issue of having to go back to stock to have an inspection done...and yes then the stock computer would be useless...although IMHO any obd2 computer is useless
