Default First post, first issue: manual transmission shifter overthrow

Hello,

I own a 2002 Civic LX, 1.7 5 spd. Car has 85k miles.

When shifting into 1st, 3rd, and less noticably, 5th, even during normal non-spirited driving, the shifter allows travel beyond the point of gear engagement; it then springs back to the normal position. If I'm real careful to just click it in it naturally won't do it. It's not a real problem, it just makes the shifter feel more mushy than it needs to be.

I have already fixed a problem that compounded this one; the shifter pivot ball had been seperating as I moved the gear lever. I had to dissasemble the housing and bond it back together, major improvement, but not completely fixed; I did leave the console off for a week or so to make sure my methods held. I only mention this since it might indicate someone was beating on the car pretty hard before I picked it up 6 months ago.

Thanks in advance.

Someone else had this issue a while back. I do not recall exactly what he did to fix it (or if he's fixed it at all), but I wouldn't have sealed your pivot ball if I were you. An ample coating of lithium grease would have made the joint lubricated enough to prevent the pivot ball from opening on shifts.

It almost sounds like the retainer clip that holds the primary shifter cable to the whole housing has gone missing, or isnt holding the cable in, causing the cable to slacken as its pushed out of the housing in 1st, 3rd, and 5th.

But thats just my opinion.

The throwout bearing really doesnt have to do with actual shifting, it pushes against the pressure plate to release the clutch.

This really sounds like a primary shifter cable issue, as that is what moves when you move the shifter front to back. Sounds like its not the proper length, or is broken.

hate to bring this thread back up but ...did we decide to fix this problem by replacing the primary shift cable?

I'll tell you what, I'll bring my shift linkages with me to the IA next month, and you can just buy them off of me.

buy those. don't worry about them being for an RSX. I own an RSX and an EM2, I just double checked for you that they both do in fact share the same shifter cable bushings. With those you'll never have slop again.
