Default Short Shifter problem

My brother put in a short shifter in his 97 gsr.
Now his car won't go in first gear.
The only way it goes into first is when you completly stop the car and force the stick really hard into gear. I mean you have to use a lot of force to get it into first gear.

The rest of the gears are fine.

any ideas what would be going on.

Hmm --- Did he have any issues whatsoever prior to the shifter install...how many miles on the clutch?

i'm not sure if this is normal for a lot of G3's.. but i know a whole lot of people with this problem with their STOCK shifters, including me. what i do is let off the clutch a bit while the car is moving, and the shifter should suck up into first gear.

anybody know if this is a normal thing? or just us?

Hey man what kinda short shifter is it? I have a B&M short shifter in mine and everything went in fine but going into first its a little tough but from what ive asked its just how the short shifter is designed and that when you put a SS in a car, its automatically going to feel different than a stock one. I have just gotten used to it and everything is fine.

make sure the bushing that holds the shifter assmebly is very tight (its about 2" behind the short shifter part towards the rear of the car). Make sure all the bolts were tightend back in. If that doesn' work, take the shifter out ASAP, it's doing nothing good for the tranny. My short shifter ate up my 3rd gear synchro and made me unable to use Reverse. I took it out... reverse worksvery well but my 3rd gear is of no more... looks like this is gonna be a 3rd gear synchro replacement after about 6,000 miles of the previous 3rd gear synchro.

take the shifter out, i highly advise yuo.

Dang, I've had my cheapo AutoZone short shifter for probably 40K miles now, absolutely no problems whatsoever, shifts so nice.

Short Shifters

Personall this is the worst mod you can do to your car!! WHY?? Because these shifters were originally intended for cars without synchros!! When you install these on cars with synchros you seriously shorten the life of them and then you will agree with me why this is the worst mod to do when you get the bill from AAMCO to rebuild your tranny!!

Sometimes it gets stuck when I go into reverse. Yeah, rolling the car a little then putting it into gear does work. But if it's happening most of the time then take out the short shifter. I admit I shouldn't have put it on in the first place. Looks good and clean but it F**ks up your tranny.

you're doing something wrong if you are messing up your tranny with a short shifter. stay away from generic crap and learn how to drive and you'll be okay.

yeah it also gets stuck in reverse somtimes, you have to literally punch it out of gear, and in gear.

You, sir, are a moron. Please do not spread mis-information. If you dont know, DONT ANSWER! Short shifters are not bad for your transmission, they will not "eat up" syncros, and they will not fawk up anything else. All it does is change the pivot point on the shift lever, thus making the actual throw shorter, the bottom of the shifter that connects to the shift linkage moves THE EXACT SAME DISTANCE on a short shifter.

To answer the original question, put the original shifter back in and see if that remedies the problem...if not, im going to put my $ on a bent shift fork.

Maybe it's just me, but when I learned to drive, I was told first is only to be used when you are at a full stop. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. How fast are you going when you're trying to throw it into first anyway?

there is a first gear lock out, and you have to give it a pretty good rev to get it in, but when I attempt to autocross, I gotta stab the gas pretty hard to get it to match and slide in...

This is a personal experience for me w/short shifter kits.1st off the bat buy a complete shift kit.Meaning that you will replace everything trans to the shifter. This will make life much easier so you won't be looking for a bent rod for example.Like pops always said dont change 1 blow radiator hose, change them all 1 crack...good luck on yur diagnosis.

yes i would have to agree everyone that i know to date personally has killed their synchros, shortly after installing a short shifter... dont do it.... take it from a guy that has one..

i have heard positive results from short shifters but it seems if you dont do it exactly right your going to *** up your tranny real fast... i have no information to support my case just simply offering my .02C.........

Yo nfn15037 im sorry to tell u but i know what im talking about and for calling me a moron why dont u look @ yourself in the mirror especially with that stupid avatar u are posting!! To back my points look @ all the problems people have posted about shortshifters not getting into gear!!! Do you think everybody installed thier shifters wrong??? I wanna thanks ThrillaKilla for backing me up that these shortshifters will chew up and spit out your synchros!! Whenever i do a mod i weigh the pros and cons of the mod to see if it is worth it!! Having a short shifter for race day is sweet but for everyday driving the tranny takes to much of a beating and the money to replace a tranny is not worth it to make quick shifts!!!

So nfn15037 why dont u stick that in your pipe and smoke it u STUNNA!!!!

maybe u drive like a stunna and **** up ur tranny cuz of ur stunna shifting. bought my car in 95, had a short shifter ever since (bandmpro) and 156k later on a fullybuilt LS turbo, still no grinding? Launching on 25" slicks all the time. I change my tranny oil every other oil change by the way...

to short shifter haters, im living proof that it doesnt **** up your tranny. if it does, you're doing something wrong.

dude, u r a moron, if you shift slowly (like you were *gasp* daily driving) the SS would have NOTHING to do with messing up your synchros. If you know how to drive your car and shift it properly (not just fast, but accurately) with a regular shifter and a short shifter you will not mess up your tranny. Mine is fine after 20K on my B&M short shifter, no problems whatsoever...
