Timing Belt Condition
So i got my brand new Honda OEM Timing Belt and Water Pump in the mail today and i quickly headed over to the accord faq and opened up TouringAccord's Guide , as i have never done this on a honda before. I got to the steps of taking off the timing belt covert and i remember reading in the Helms manual about inspecting your timing
belt, so i did that, and to be honest it looks pretty good, I had bought this car from a lady and I never got the chance of asking about the timing belt and i kept hearing peoples timing belt snapping and valves bending and I am in virginia right now and about to head to texas so i didnt want that happening to me during the trip so i got the new timing belt and water pump, but after "inspecting" it the best i could i want to say the belt is pretty "new" or great shape the Honda and blue/white letters are kinda faded by still readable.. I took pics so mabey some of yall would like to put your input.. i am not really looking for people to say "omg dont change it ,it looks great!' More of peoples thoughts and if i wasted 105 bucks on this when i could have used it on the trip, i probably gonna go ahead and change it sense i already have all this stuff off lol. I was gonna take the belt off to take pics but i need that damn camshaft tool -__-, which im getting tomorrow though id just start today and get some of it done. Anyways thanks for reading and helping me inspect!

i know the pics arent in GREAT quality but honest y looking at the belt in person and my brand new one.. i see no difference in "wear and tear"
Ps i got the car around 130k and now it has 155k mabey she changed it before selling it? it also says HONDA on it just like my new one so i know its a OEM honda belt. So that also makes me think mabey she never changed it! or did all of her maintenance schedule at the dearship

Generally, the dealer recommends the timing belt to be changed at every 90,000 miles for the 5th gen. Sometimes, it very hard to tell when a belt has been change; lol, especially from the posted pics.
Look at the oil seals (e.g., crank shaft seal, balancer seal), do they look okay? Does the balancer seal have the retainer on it? Normally, the dealers change the seals and water pump at the same time they replace the timing belt.
It is up to you, you can either do it now or wait till 180,000 miles if you believe it has been changed before.

If it was me, I would just go ahead and change it.
You don't have anything that shows when it was last changed so you can't be sure. A lot of people will tell you by the time it starts showing wear it's not long before it snaps.
So no, I don't think you wasted your money.

If you already have the timing belt and a few hours to do it, there's no reason not to. It'd just be another thing that you don't have to do to your car for several more years.
thanks guys, i was just wondering, im def still going to change everything specially sense i gotta go over 1500 miles to tx, so no worries, was just curious really thats all
change it ... that way you can record when it was last done ...... see if you can get a water pump or just wait till that goes

my 6th gen 4cyl accord has 218 000km on it's ORIGINAL timing belt.. i'm replacing it next week! but still looks fine. And i live in Canada, with alot of weather variation. I do push my car hard sometimes too
i was wondering, since i'll be doing it with the engine in the car, even if my seals look fine, should i replace them? (e.g., crank shaft seal, balancer seal)
Do you guys think it will be a bitch to replace since i dont have "perfect" access down there? (engine in car)
thanks for your imput

well, since the job is a PITA and everything is already apart, it's not worth not doing IMO. If something goes bad 1 year from now do you really want to take it all apart and do it all again? If the answer is no, then just replace the seal now. If you don't mind doing it again and feel like saving some money now, then don't. But be prepared that there is a possibility that the seals could start leaking between now and when you need to do another timing belt job, then that means you have to go through the entire job again.
