Rattling muffler
my muffler is rattling on my 96 hatch and i replaced the other one i had because it had a hole and the one i have know which is like 1 year old has been rattling since i put it on and i know this is the problem because while its running i push it up with my foot and the sound stops... what should i use to hold the muffler up and stop rattling... omg it wasnt this bad but now everytime im at a red light i hear it so loud... somebody give me some suggestions...thanx
Do you mean to say the actual muffler is rattling against something, like the bumper, or loose bolts on the flange? Or do you mean to say that it has things inside of it rattling?
no not inside of it just he muffler itself is rattling... like when i hit potholes it goes up and down a bit and makes that loud *** rattling sound at idle... but like i said the muffler is like a year old so it works and sounds fine when i hit the gas so the muffler itself and has nothing rattling inside
Well, it may be hanging wrong due to too short (or even too long) of hangers.
Could be a number of things
- Hangers are too short, the tip or even the muffler itself is touching the bumper or actual underside of the car.
-Hangers are too long, or theres not enough bend in the axle-back section, so its making contact with the Lower Control arm.
- Check to make sure all the bolts in the flange for your axle-back are tight.
Those are pretty much the 3 major things that it could be if the muffler itself is rattling. If anything, raise or lower your idle, that way it wont do that so bad at idle. Youd be surprised what a difference raising your idle a few hundred RPMs would do. If your Idle is too low, it will obviously rattle your entire system.

you hit the nail on the head... when my car is at low rpms its horrible i have to literally hit the gas for the sound to stop and its embarrasing when i got chicks in the car u know? and by the way my car is automatic so its always at low rpms

Well, its simple, If you have the standard sidemounted Manifold ( not the D16y7's bastard child downdraft manifold, lol) then there is a screw on the very top of the Throttle Body, thats facing to the passenger side, its located in an circle-indentation, you cant miss it, its very visible. You turn it to one way to raise or lower, im not sure, you can figure it out on the spot, it raises\lowers it slowly so you'll have time to figure it out on the spot. Im failry sure its clockwise to raise the idle. Bring it to anywhere from 750 to 1000 RPMs, basically anywhere in that area that you find it doenst rattle.

hahaha nice, i had one once, their hard. Ok hmm, let me think, its the same thing, but in a diff position. Theres a screw on the Throttle body, if it hasnt been touched with before, there will be a rubber gasket\cover over it that prevents dust\dirt from getting on it. Remove that, and do as i had said before. Im going to searchup some more on where it is exactly, maybe a picture or two, but as i said, its on the actual TB, and in plain sight. From what i remember with mine, it was facing striaght up actually, and was easy.
Not much luck finding a picture or anything related to y7 manifold, just allota threads asking about swapping from y7 to 78 ( standard style) manifold. I had the Y7 awhile ago, and man oh man was it a bitch to work ok, lol everything is diff and weird, compared a normal one on most honda motors, lol.
If worse comes to worse, get a service manuel for your car, it will be worth it in the long run, how can you go wrong for like 15 $. It can be found at any local car store.
