Default Smoke is bad

I recently changed spark plugs and noticed 2 nd 3 were wet with what appeared to be oil. The previous owner changed the head gasket, but when I first got the car it ran great. After a month it started ******* out and now it is burning oil like no other. I was on a hill going up at a stop sign and noticed a bunch of dark, strong smelling smoke creeping past and got worried. I was at another stop and took off with a bit of quickness and looked back to see a trail of dark smoke. I have been told this is probably piston rings, but I am curious if there are any alternatives to fixing this as the motor has about 185k on it and the body is not in the greatest condition. Looking for something to get me from A-B reliably. If it came down to it I would want to swap in a stock motor with lower milage to save costs. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks

yeah could be bad piston rings or maybe valve seals. do a compression test just to make sure.
