axle is loose should it be
gf came home from a 4 hour trip and there's a noise coming so i look under and i find the axle coming out of the trany on pass side is loose. now i don't think it should be but should it be and if not that's prob the problem right? is so do i have to get a new axle or jsut that part?? help please
There should be 1/16" or less gap between the inner joint and the axle seal on the trans. If it just comes out without any reistance, then the clip ring on the end might not be in place, or it might be worn down and need replacing... meaning you'll need some gear oil too for a top off once you switch it out.

Not sure what you mean... which seal? If you mean the clip ring on the end of the axle inside the transmission, if it is working right, you'll need to pry the axle away to get it out. If you can just grab the inner joint and pull it out by hand, then its too loose and not doing its job.

correct but not gear oil mobil 10/30 gear oil is junk.... just drain the tranny fluid and put new in while you add it it probly has never been changed </TD></TR></TABLE>
You're right, I typed 'gear oil' but I was thinking 'Honda MTF'.

Is the axle loose at the transmission or at the wheel? I'm still a little confused what your situation is. Like said, if it looks like the axle is coming out of the transmission, its likely your ring has warn and allowed it to pop out. If the gear of the axle at the wheel side is loose/broken, then the axle would need to be replaced. Typically the boot will be cracked allowing grease to exit and dirt to get it to cause the gear to break.

do yourself a favour. Time to buy axles. If they are clicking when you trun the wheels that means they are on the way out.
If you have a good gap from the tranny to the axle that also means the c-clip on the end of the axle has worn down enought to let the axle move out of the tranny. This could also cause possible leakage of fluid.
Time to get new axles my friend.
