Hello! I am hoping someone out there can help me solve a problem with my '88 Accord LXi. The engine is spewing oil into the air cleaner and onto the ground. I just had the head reworked with new guides, valves, etc. The cylinders looked great with the original cross-hatch still visible. Upon reassembly, the car runs great but will leak oil onto the ground shortly after being driven and the air cleaner has oil inside and the bottom of the air filter is oil-soaked. The area around the breather is wet with oil. Is there something in that breather box that controlls the way the air and oil is separated as the engine is running? When I turn a corner, the car sometimes smokes real bad, I assume it is drawing oil in from the PCV system in some way. It leaves a large puddle of oil after I park it, but not all the time. The oil problem has been going on for some time and is getting worse.

To much pressure in crankcase, put in a breather filter . Nothing really controls the air and oil. Also check PCV valve to see if it's working.

 

Thanks for the info - I am getting more info now from multiple sources - it appears that there was a piston ring problem on some of these cars during the late '80's. Looks like the head is coming back off and the rings have to be replaced. Anyone ever done that in the car before?

It's me again - started taking stuff off the engine - the air filter housing had several ounces of oil inside, the filter was soaked and the hose running from the valve cover to the intake was wet with oil. PCV valve looked OK and you can blow through it. The valve is a little dirty but not real bad. I've never seen blow-by do this before! I can't think of anything else it could be now.

On my LX the intake had oil which was coming from the breather hose, I removed the hose and put a breather filter (steel), you should take a look at what your throttle body looks like
Usualy the blowby pressure will be handled by your PCV valve and breather, but under hard accl. or wot the PCV valve has no vacum which will cause all that pressure to go through the tiny breather hose, often and most likely taking oil with it.

Found the problem - two broken pistons between the first and second rings. No other damage. Oil control rings appeared very weak. Bearings good.
