you should just stick to using the chain lube. also make sure you lube your chain every 500miles and get check if it needs tightening every 3k or so. if the chain gets too loose it will hurt your mpg and maybe do greater damage in the long run.

I use WD40 to clean my chain, then whichever chain lube I: a) got fo' free! or b) can steal from my buddies.
Be sure you're not just spraying *****-nilly. Spraying the outside of the chain doesn't do jack.

I use the same stuff, work great and pretty dang cheap!
BTW, don't use oil as it will damage your o-rings.

any input on royal purple chain lube? guy at the parts counter at napa recommended it to me. This is my first bike so any tips on lubeing the chain would also be appreciated. I'm taking it to our local Honda motorcycle dealership for maintenance but i want to get all this stuff down so i can do it on my own.

Is it okay for an O ring chain? If it is, you could use it. Personally, once my can of Bel-ray runs out, I'll be running the dupont lube in the link. 6.50 for a 6 ounce can of bel- ray or 6.95 for an 11 ounce? No contest. Clean the chain with a rag and kerosene, maybe take for quick ride to warm it up (I use a hair dryer) and spray the lube on the side of the chain that contacts the sprokets.

DO NOT USE MOTOR OIL OR GEAR OIL!
i fried a chain some time back after about 300miles of cleaning and re-oiling it. it was literally smoking! what happened was, i cleaned it and used some off the shelf oil that wasn't stickey so it all fell off until the chain was dry. chain lube is sticky for a reason!
