Default B16A swap into UK ESi - a little issue.

Hi Guys,

Although a relative 'newb' on here, I'm just after some suggestions as to what a problem I've got, is. The car is an EG5 with an SIR EG6 swap.

Symptoms:

- "Diesel-like" Noise on idle & throttle. (A soft clatter)
- Sounds as though it's coming from underneath the inlet manifold.
- Only heard from inside the car, but definitely coming from the 'bay.

I like to not be flamed here, but I really don't know what it could be. I've changed the plugs, injectors, fuel rail and had the valve clearances done.

Any suggestions very welcome!

Quick Pic: (not sure if I'm allowed to post straight pics!)

Clicky.

Thanks,

Perhaps an exhaust leak?

I was thinking the same...
Did you use a new donut gasket between the header and the cat?

Hadn't thought about that.

The noise disappears on the over-run btw.

I didn't use a new gasket no, I just mated the OEM Manifold to my UK length cat.

I'd try a new gasket. Also make sure all of the exhaust joints are tightened securely and that the correct bolts/springs are being used at the manifold-cat flex joint.

go buy a gasket, theyre pretty inexpensive (maybe 10-20 quid- theres my british for today)

what specs did you adjust the valves to?

its strange that you cant hear it anywhere except inside the car...probably just cant over the noise of everything else, im assuming

I didn't do the valves, they were done when I had the timing belt changed two weeks ago. Didn't wanna try doing that myself. But they were to standard spec.

It doesn't sound like an exhaust leak tho tbh, I do have a gasket in the car loose, I'll see if that helps.

The noise has been there ever since I did the swap in November. I've done 10,000 miles since, and it's not missed a beat. It's just a really really really annoying sound.

I'll try my best tomorrow, it might get drowned out by exhaust noise.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll bump tomorrow with a vid / sound clip.

It kicks in as soon as the throttle / idle control catches the over-run if that makes sense! :S and it rises with engine speed.
