Does the center of you roof sink in when you wash the roof of your whip? If so, you probably have the same problem as seen in the picture below. Since I will be leaving the headliner out and having the interior sprayed to match the exterior, I would like to secure the braces to the roof. Anyone ever dealt with this problem. Need a recommendation on what to use and any tips you may have.

dam... that is interesting my old hatch had that problem... since ur painting the car why not do some tack welds? or that body panel glue?

 

careful with the welder you dont want to have to paint the roof too. I would use some body panel adhesive the heavy duty 2 part self mixing apoxy

 

^he's painting the exterior too. i would tack weld. but it looks like it's kept on there with double sided tape? lol.

 

Becareful, those look bent downwards, if you were to re-attach them to the roof you may wind up with a concave roof.

 

Looks like something landed on your roof to bend the braces down. Maybe you want to fix that before doing any type of attachment.

 

Use a heavy duty seam sealer

 

I went outside and pushed the brackets upward into the roof. The braces are not going to bring the roof inward (concave). I just need an idea of how to keep the braces pressed against the roof while the sealer dries for a few hours (preferbly over night)

Any ideas?

 

just sleep on top of the car. or a towel a bucket and enough weight in it to hold the roof down. you could also use a jackbrace easily made with a hi lift jack a 2 or 3 foot bar and some 2x6 boards. inside the car put a board on the floor, put the hi lift on the board. then put the bar on the lifting foot of the high lift. jack the bar up to the brace with a board in between the brace and the bar. apply desired tension and you are set.

 

I wouldnt weld it unless i plan on leveling out the roof, when the sheet metal gets hot it will warp. so if ur gonna straighten the roof anyway, weld it but i would recomend glue!

 

From what I've seen before it seems they're not supposed to be attached to the roof. They might be bent downwards, but I don't think they're supposed to be attached from the factory.

 

They aren't attached from the factory. They just double as a mounting bracket for the headliner and anti-cave-in for when you roll your car over.

 

When I pulled my headliner off I had my support get pulled down because i couldn't get the push tab holders out........ I ended up just laying on my back and leg pressed mine back up into the roof skin....... haven't had an issue since....

And <u>YES</u> they are attached (with some form of adhesive caulk) from the factory, they are what supports the roof skin from caving in.......

If that's so, then I'd suggest the OP use a similar product.

 

I believe they are attached to the roof. You can see the glue on the roof that would match the braces if they were pushed upward. Thanks for the tips. I'm going to try the wood & jack route

 

When I did mine it was a hot day (and having a black car helps) so when I pulled my brace down the adhesive stuff was still soft and so when I pushed it back up it re attached to the brace and I've not had an issue since...... BUT..... I do have a carbon fiber headliner so it's hard to say if it would help or hurt holdin the brace up...
