Default what material dimple die gussets for cages?

I was just wondering what material you guys are using when you gusset cages and dimple die them? I've seen some nice work on here cages and dimple die stuff. Didn't know if it was like .085 sheet or real thick stuff like .125 plate. What is everyone using?

I think due to the dimples, the use for thicker material isn't completely necessary?

Search on the FIA website, there is a minimum requirement for gusset thickness on there. If I recall correctly it was like .039.

I ended up using 18 gauge sheet metal ~ .0478".

Actually here ya go.

"8.2.14 Gusset
Reinforcement for a bend or junction made from bent sheet metal
with a U shape (Drawing 253-34) the thickness of which must not
be less than 1.0 mm.

The ends of this reinforcement must be situated at a distance from
the top of the angle of between 2 to 4 times the diameter of the
biggest of the tubes joined."

Thanks Dave! What about the guys I've seen that have used a flat sheet to attach tubing to the body (either A-piller or similar), any ideas on that? Seems like you would want a thicker material in that case...

Typically if I am attaching the cage to the body I will use .125 flat sheet. If I am gusseting the cage itself then I will use thinwall tubing or .045 or 16ga sheet. I wouldn't use thin sheet to attach to the body unless you are wrapping the tube or using a similar method of integrating the tube into the chassis.

Yeah, .125 seems a little excessive to me but it couldn't hurt I suppose...

The dimples strenghtens the piece tremendously, i think .125" is really overkill! Weight is just as bad as a shitty chassis. lol

I think he's talking about the plates, like at the bottom of the main hoop. Where's actually mounting to the chassis. Isn't 1/8"X6"X6" required by some sanctioning bodies, and exceeds just about every other one?

What part of "dimple die gussets" makes you think he's talking about the floor plates? lol

turboteener, i think was not talking about a guesset, (at least as FIA defines it).

this is a guesset as the FIA describes it
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by david@didrace.com &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">

</TD></TR></TABLE>

and I am pretty sure turboteener was talking about a stright peace of bracing.

like this

As you can see the bracing is a plate and doesn't U bend around tubing

That doesn't look like .125 based on the haz and the curvature but it might be...

wasn't saying that it was .125 just that what turboteener was talking about wasn't the same thing the FIA gave requirements for.

I will use 2in wide 1-2 inch long pieces of .125 for tying the main hoop to the B-pillar or a-pillar in cases where the main hoop is not wedged up against the chassis. I have taken .125 plate and drilled it with a hole saw and the welded it into the corners to make gussets, then turn a small strip perpendicular to the plate and span the corner. It looks kinda odd, but works very well.

No I was not referring to the FIA style corner gussets. My copy of the rules say not less than 1.0mm. I would probably make it out of something a little thicker.
