If your car is OBD2, it will throw a check engine light for emmisions. Wont really affect gas mileage if its OBD1.
Oh and it also makes your exhaust louder, and sound like crap In my opinion. Gives it that typical rice bucket fart sound.

i don't have to worry about emissions for another 2 years so i'm pretty sure i'll have a new cat by then. So it will affect my gas mileage since my car is OBD2?

Probably. Keep the CAT in, or get a high flow at least. Dont gut your CAT, keep emmisions down. Not to mention you dont have to be at inspection to get that noticed. Cops arent stupid, they know when a car has no cat, just by taking one swiff of your exahust fumes if they ever pull you over. Its just one more thing for them to give you a ticket on.

Carsound cat, or oem.

Don't go cheap on your cat, it will sound like ****, you'll throw a code, and likely hurt performance due to your o2 sensor being like "WTF y0, What's all this ****"
