NO...but just for kick's i would totally do it...it is your 'beater'....so it would be a cool project just to pull off. I'd try the targa top...because it kinda looks better then the the whole roof missing...and horrible conversion's i've seen in the past remind me of the first pic. So if you're gonna *** it up anyway...do the targa..
The 4th gen unibody was never designed to be a convertible. You will be removing a major structural component (the roof). Go out to your car, and open both doors. Now look through the car. See how thin the floor is? That's what would be supporting the weight of the vehicle if the roof is gone.
If you do end up doing it, just don't ever open both doors at the same time!

The targa looks better, i suggest bracing from front to back though, shes going to twist like crazy in the twisties. Interesting project though. Try and make the detachable roof re-attachable though for rainy days

I knew someone who tried making his civic targa top.
That civic shuttered like crazy going 50mph and up. I was not sure if he braced anything though. If i had only those two choices i'd go targa top.

you must really trust everyone else on the road a lot.....
a 20mph rear end from someone not paying attention while you were stopped at a red light has an excellent shot at fatally killing both front passengers....
that roll bar thing you have is not going the important way, the important way is from the dashboard along the A pillar and then tracing the top of the front window, and then to the floor.
imagine a venis fly trap, and your a bumble bee thats wandered into the wrong part of town....
im going to leave out comments on how it looks or why de-roofing a clean car like that is a crime, as per your explicit instructions.

targa top!
my buddy did it on his CRX it looked pritty good but you will need to reinforce with a roll cage if you do any of these outrageous things
