Help I just installed a new waterpump and timing belt runs like crap
Well what I did was replace those two things, messed up the timing somehow so I had to redo it. What I do is got a screw driver, turned the crank until it was at TDC. So then I tried to line up the cam gear. put it as best as I could to line up the marks with the head and the "UP mark" slightly to the front. I started it up and it ran like complete crap.
I tried moving the cam gear one notch at a time to see if it would run better but nope, any notch other than that one and It wouldn't even run. so I put it back how it was so now it ran but it sounded like it was running on three cylinders.
My teacher came up and started to mess with the timing on the dizzy. now it runs but it still kinda sounds kinda funny. The dizzy Is pulled all the way up to the front of the car.
When I was driving it home i notice the car is very very slow, I can barley keep up with traffic
When Im driving the car cant rev past 3k RPMs and if I do go past the rpms will just drop. I thought I snapped the timing belt but no. And as I approach 3k RPMs the car will sputter badly.
Can anyone help me? thanks

Sounds like its still off a tooth, especially since the dizzy is cranked all the way forward.
How are you setting the crank and cam to TDC?
Did you replace anything other than the timing belt and water pump? What does your water temp gauge say?

I know thats what I thought too but If I moved it as little as one notch either way, It would not run at all.

The Marks on the Crank pulley are incorrect so I use a long screw driver to set the crank to TDC, then I adjust the cam gear accordingly.

Nope just those things.
And now that you mention the temp guage it was going CRAZY! I mean like one second its all the way on H then the next minute It would drop right back down, in no pattern.

T-stat grounds? I haven't checked those.

Electrical issue aside, it really sounds like you're a tooth or two advanced, due to the detonation and need to retard the dizzy. If the timing mark on the cover isn't good, take the crank pulley off again and look at the smaller sprocket, it has a notch in it that you can line up with an arrow that's cast into the block. You can also use a timing light (which you should do now that you've moved the dizzy) to see if the cam appears to be too advanced.
And yeah, check the grounds: thremostat, clutch bracket, valve cover. Remove them and clean the mating surfaces, put vaseline on them, and bolt them back down. The vaseline will squeeze out and seal the mating surfaces from corrosion. If any of the wires are broken or frayed (and if they're stock, it's likely), replace them.
