Default Swapping Axle! How much should Snap Ring be out of Groove?

I am swapping my axle on my own for the first time (my neighbor usually does it in 10 minutes) . I cant figure out how much the Snap Ring on the Inner spline should be coming out of its groove... Its pretty Big and Loose.. Does it shrink down when i put it into the Tranny?

The snap ring will be loose in its grove. When you slide it into the trans it will compress the open back up once seated correctly to keep the shaft from popping out
