Default Newbie questions

Ok so it looks like I am looking to start riding. I am going to sign up for the MSF course, but I read horror stories about the figure 8. Is there a "instructions list" or something I can read to prepare myself? I do not have a motorcycle yet and I do not know anyone who can loan me one .. so practicing for that is kinda out the door.

What else do I need to know besides that to pass and get my license?

thanks in advance.

its best if you go into the msf course as 'fresh' as possible. you get hands-on instruction from experts. it also allows you to learn without having to 'unlearn' any bad habits that you picked up before the course.

imo, if you pay attention in class and LISTEN to the instructors, you'll be just fine.

The drills you practice in class are the same ones you have to perform for the final test (riding portion) for the MSF class.

Just remember, if you're having trouble and no instructor spots it, speak up!!

Unless things have changed since I last took the class, all you need to bring are gloves, a heavyweight (longsleeve) jacket, jeans, and boots that cover the ankles. They provide brain buckets.

when i took it (MD), they provide gloves, helmets, and bikes

you still need long sleeves, jeans, and ankle covering boots.

wait so does every class provide the helmets/gloves/bikes? So I would need to be wearing the proper attire? I thought the only time i would be riding on a bike would be the figure 8 lol.

It's a dangerous sport, but we do what we can to minimize danger and injury.

And don't be late to the first class meet.

^ im guessing the instructor throws you out if you're late? lol

As far as riding, how did you guys start? I mean I was thinking first riding at night when theres less cars, then taking it on the fwy when theres less car, and then gradually go up from there.

If you can't pass MSF you shouldn't be riding, all you need to know really.

They occasionally have standby students who get your spot if you show up late. You don't lose out on your money, but you'll have to wait for the next available class. Depending on how booked they are, it may not be for awhile.

figure 8 isnt that hard. just look where you want to go, and move your *** to the outside of the turn. also the bike behaved smoother when I put it into 2nd gear. you can do it in 1 or 2, but 1 was jerky for me so 2 felt better.
