Distributor Problem. Need help.
So this just happened today. I wasnt doing anything but driving home from work. I started hearing a prety loud squeaking and kind of grinding noise. I pulled over to check it out. The noise was coming from my distributor. Took it home and checked it out. I wasnt sure what it was and I wasnt familiar with it. Havent done a tune up for a good minute so i ran to autzone got everything i need except the spark plug wires. Replaced everything and im still hearing the noise. What do i need to do now? I might be able to get a video of what it sounds like and how its running. But thats if anyone really needs it. Please help me if you know what my problem is. Thanks.

I imagine you didn't replace the head or the camshaft or maybe not the distributor...
Did you remove the distributor cap? Was there rust-colored dust inside? What did the tip of the distributor rotor look like? Was the inside of the distributor cap chewed up?

sounds like the bearings inside the dizzy are junk (fairly common IMO)... get a new one.. bolt it in/plug it in and enjoy the rest of your day.
I got the cap, the rotor, the plugs and the wires. And yes there was the brown dust all in it. everything insdie the cap was covered in it. I guess the best way to fix it is to buy a new distributor. Thanks for the help.
Ok. So lets update. Called around to find out the price on a distributor. Since i have an F20a im not sure what car it comes out of so the only parts i know will match up would be the H23. So called around and the prices were from 300 to 700. Depending on brand and all that. So i called the junkyard. Found one off an H23 they hooked us up for 100 dollars. Brought took it home. Come to find out that it doesnt have the internal coil. Completely different and i have no experience with this kind of stuff. What do i do now? anyone? Anyone know someone that has a F20a and sellin parts off of? Also is there anyone on this site i can send my distributor to and they can replace the broken parts on it?
The brown dust means the distributor shaft bearing's shot. I don't think parts are replacable, you have to get a distributor. I don't know what cars had an F20A, or what's compatible.

Ok i picked up a distributor today thats the exact same distributor as mine except it does not have the internal coil. My distributor/harness is wired for the internal coil, how can i swap all of the internals to the new distributor?
ok so i prety much swapped my whole wiring harness over to the H23 distributor and put everything inplace so now the H23 distributor has the internal coil and will run for my car. Everything was perfect. Put it on my car and the car started right up. Right after it started it threw a check engine code. Code 9. Something like one of the cylinders arent working. I tried to reset the ECU going by the way it told me in the hanyes manual and it still came back on. Car was runnin fine so i took it for a drive. Drover great. nothing acted up. I have no idea what to do now. And i cant find the distributor for my car ANYWHERE. Anyone have any other ideas i can do to get rid of the code?
Code 9 is for the CYP sensor; that's one of those star wheels down inside the distributor. Check for loose/dirty plugs on that circuit. (I don't know what wire colors.)
Finally fixed it. Thanks for the help. It ended up one of the three sensors. It was prety loose me and my dad replaced the roller in it that kept it tight and it worked great. problem went away and its driving great.
