black smoke is fuel.
since you have fpr and igniton, and straight exhaust your just running rich and it is unburnt fuel...not to big of a deal.

I hope you have a fuel pressure gauge if you have an adjustable FPR.

When I had my old 189k mile GS-R dynoed, there was a noticeable amount of smoke coming from the exhaust when VTEC engaged as well. The tech said it was normal

Well i wouldnt say it is normal for it to smoke when vtec kicks in, but it is common with these engines. If the car was completely healthy it wouldnt do it.

Well as strong as it was, it did have 189k on it... I suppose he just meant "nothing to worry about" when he said that.
