Default how to read cel codes

ok this may sound dumb but i went to autozone to get my cel light read so i can see what exactly is going on. I know that the ecu and the service check connector is located behind the kickpanel. Here is my question i took off the kickpanel but the ecu is bolted down and is in the way. Do i unbolt the ecu to get to the service check connector or is it tucked away somewhere else behind the ecu?

What year is your car? If it is obd2 then the connector is under the center of the dash on the passanger side. You cant miss it.
